Brake Shift Interlock Actuator - Column Shift
Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. Service and Repair
2. Remove the 3 screws and the upper steering column shroud.
3. Insert a scratch awl into the access hole located in the bottom of the lower steering column shroud. Push in on the ignition lock cylinder release pin rotate the ignition lock cylinder clockwise to the RUN position and remove the ignition lock cylinder from the steering column.
4. Remove the lower steering column shroud.
5. Remove the 2 screws and the knee bolster from the instrument panel.
6. CAUTION: Before lowering the steering column assembly, completely loosen the shift indicator adjustment mechanism and disconnect the shift indicator cable and adjustment mechanism from the steering column lever to avoid damaging the shift indicator assembly.
Rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel clockwise until enough slack exists to disconnect the shift indicator cable from the steering column lever. After the shift indicator cable is disconnected continue to rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel clockwise until the shift indicator cable can be pulled through the adjustment wheel and the adjustment mechanism can fall away from the steering column tube.
7. Remove the 2 nuts and the steering column absorber.
8. Remove the 2 nuts and lower the steering column assembly.
9. Disconnect the brake shift interlock actuator electrical connector.
10. Remove the 3 Torx head screws and the brake shift interlock actuator and the bracket from steering column tube.
11. Remove the circlip and separate the actuator from the bracket.
Installation
1. Position the actuator onto the bracket and install the circlip.
2. Install the brake shift interlock actuator onto the steering column tube and secure with 3 Torx head screws.
- Tighten screws to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).
3. Connect the electrical connector to the brake shift interlock actuator.
4. Raise the steering column assembly into position and secure with 2 nuts.
- Tighten nuts to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
5. Install the steering column absorber and secure with 2 nuts.
- Tighten nuts to 15 Nm (11 lb-ft).
6. Thread the shift indicator cable through the shift indicator adjustment wheel and connect the shift indicator cable to the steering column lever. Rotate the shift indicator adjustment wheel counterclockwise onto the shift indicator adjustment mechanism and install into position. Adjust shift indicator as necessary.
7. Install the knee bolster to the instrument panel and secure with 2 screws.
8. Place the lower steering column shroud into position and insert the ignition lock cylinder into the steering column tube.
9. Install the upper steering column shroud and secure with 3 screws.
10. Connect battery ground cable. Service and Repair
11. Check for correct brake shift interlock operation. The ignition key should be removable only with the transaxle range selector lever in PARK. The transaxle range selector lever should be locked in the PARK position with the key removed.
