Removal

REMOVAL





Special Tool(s)

Removal
1. Remove the battery.





2. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the two breather tubes.





3. Remove the engine air cleaner cover and tube assembly.





4. Remove the two bolts and the air filter assembly.





5. Remove the relay box and remove the battery tray.





6. Disconnect the electrical connector.





7. Disconnect the electrical connector.





8. Remove the nut from the power steering line bracket.





9. Remove the electrical connector bracket.





10. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor connector.





11. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connectors.





12. Remove the manual control lever cable.
1 Remove the nut.
2 Remove the shift actuator cable fitting from the shift cable and bracket.





13. Remove the ground cable and bracket.





14. Remove the cooler line retaining clips.





15. Depress the tabs on the plastic insert retainer and remove cooler lines from fitting.





16. Remove the bolts.





17. Install the special tools.





18. Install the special tools on the right (back) hand side of the engine.





19. Install the special tools on the left (front) hand side of the engine.
20. Raise the vehicle.
21. Drain the transmission fluid by lowering the transaxle pan. Once the fluid has drained re-install the pan

22. CAUTION: If the steering gear is removed with the subframe, do not allow the steering wheel to rotate while the steering column intermediate is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be recentered before the vehicle is driven.

Remove the subframe assembly.

23. NOTE: The use of mechanics wire will aid in positioning the halfshaft out of the way.





Using the special tools, remove the LH halfshaft from the transaxle and position out of the way.

24. NOTE: The use of mechanics wire will aid in positioning the halfshaft out of the way.





Using the special tools, remove the RH halfshaft from the transaxle and position out of the way.
25. Remove the starter motor.





26. Remove the transaxle housing cover.





27. Remove and discard the four torque converter to flexplate nuts.





28. Position the high-lift transmission jack under the transaxle.





29. Remove the transaxle retaining bolt.





30. Remove the transaxle retaining bolt.





31. Remove the transaxle retaining bolts.
32. Lower the transaxle assembly from the engine compartment.





33. Remove the lower anti-roll restrictor.





34. Remove the lower anti-roll restrictor bracket.





35. Remove the rear engine support mount bracket.





36. Remove the shift cable bracket.
37. Carry out transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning.
