Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Dual Converter Y-Pipe





Material

Removal and Installation





1. Remove and discard the dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.





3. Disconnect the Catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connectors.





4. Support the exhaust system with a suitable Jack stand.





5. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe bracket nut.





6. Remove and discard the dual converter Y-pipe-to-manifold bolts.





7. CAUTION: Use caution removing the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the manifold outlet flare, the converter inlet flare or the studs.

Remove and discard the dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust system nuts and the dual converter Y-pipe.





8. Remove the gaskets and, if necessary, the CMS.
^ Discard the gaskets.

9. NOTE: Use new fasteners and gaskets.

NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the manifold outlet flares, the catalytic converter inlet flares and the three-way converter and the dual converter Y-pipe mating surfaces. Make sure not to damage the manifold outlet flare, the converter inlet flare or the studs. To correctly seat the converter, alternately tighten the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter and the three-way converter and the dual converter Y-pipe nuts.

NOTE: Using silicone lubricant, lubricate the studs on the front of the dual converter Y-pipe, the tapped holes on the rear of the Y-pipe and on the studs of the three-way converter.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
