Removal and Installation
CAUTION: MERCON, MERCON V, MERCON SP, Motorcraft Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid and Motorcraft Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid are not interchangeable transmission fluids. The use of any fluid other than what is recommended for this transmission will cause transmission damage.
NOTE: Refer to the following when adding transmission fluid.
^ The CVT transaxle uses:
- Motorcraft Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid (XT-7-QCFT)
^ The 6-speed transaxle uses:
- Motorcraft Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid (XT-8-QAW)
Do not mix the fluid together, damage to internal components will result.
CVT transaxle
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the cooler hoses from the fluid cooler.
3. NOTE: To prevent damage to the cooler tubes, pull them straight out of the filter housing.
Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transaxle.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
4. Disconnect the wiring harness from the cooler tube
5. Remove the fluid cooler tube bracket from the transaxle. Remove the fluid cooler tubes.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
6. Remove the fluid fill plug.
^ To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.).
CVT fluid level indicator without crosshatch marks
7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
1 The fluid level should be at the upper most mark on the fluid level indicator.
^ Fill the transaxle with Motorcraft Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid XT-7-QCFT meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C933-A to the specified level. Fluid should be at the upper most level with fluid temperature at 43°C - 47°C (109°F - 117°F).
^ Prior to adding any transmission fluid, make sure that the vehicle is on a level surface.
^ Check the fluid level to determine how much fluid will need to be added.
^ Using a diagnostic tool, monitor the fluid temperature. Make sure that the fluid temperature is within specification.
CVT fluid level indicator with crosshatch marks
8. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
1 The fluid level should be within the crosshatched marks on the indicator.
^ Fill the transaxle with Motorcraft Continuously Variable Chain Type Transmission Fluid XT-7-QCFT meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C933-A to the specified level. Fluid should be at the upper most level with fluid temperature at 88°C - 92°C (190°F - 198°F).
^ Prior to adding any transmission fluid, make sure that the vehicle is on a level surface.
^ Check the fluid level to determine how much fluid will need to be added.
^ Using a diagnostic tool, monitor the fluid temperature. Make sure that the fluid temperature is within specification.
9. Check the transaxle for correct operation.
6-speed transaxle
10. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
11. Disconnect the cooler hoses from the fluid cooler.
12. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes at the transaxle.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
13. Disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tube bracket. Remove the fluid cooler tubes.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
14. Remove the fluid fill plug.
^ To install, tighten to 39 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
15. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Fill the transaxle with Motorcraft Premium Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-8-QAW meeting Ford specification WSS-M2C924-A to the specified level.
^ Prior to adding any transmission fluid, make sure that the vehicle is on a level surface.
^ Check the fluid level to determine how much fluid will need to be added.
^ Using a diagnostic tool, monitor the fluid temperature. Make sure that the fluid temperature is within specification.
^ The fluid level should be within the normal operating range on the fluid level indicator.
16. Check the transaxle for correct operation.
