AM RADIO STATIC WHEN DRIVING

FORD:
2005-2006 Five Hundred, Freestyle

MERCURY:
2005-2006 Montego

ISSUE
Some 2005-2006 Five Hundred, Freestyle, and Montego vehicles equipped with all wheel drive (AWD), may exhibit AM radio reception static only while the vehicle is moving.

ACTION
If the AM radio static starts (is present) as the vehicle begins to move and stops (no longer present) with vehicle stationary, order and install a redundant ground cable and new bolt. Attach the ground cable between the vehicle chassis and the AWD electric pump motor. Refer to the following Service Procedure. For static concerns on FM or when vehicle is not moving, proceed with normal diagnostics.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTE
IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO ENLARGE ONE (1) OF THE GROUND CABLE'S EYELETS USING A 3/8" (9.5 MM) DRILL BIT. THIS IS NECESSARY TO ALLOW CLEARANCE FOR THE SOUND SHIELD BRACKET BOLT DESCRIBED IN STEP 3.

1. Attach one end of redundant ground cable to rear differential unit (RDU) feeder pump filter cover at "upper bolt" (Figure 1). Discard existing bolt and install new bolt with washer. Torque to 50.5 lb-in (5.7 N.m).

2. Route the ground cable around and towards the upper rear of the passenger side sound shield (Figure 2).

NOTE
IN STEP 3 THE GROUND CABLE EYELET MUST BE PLACED BETWEEN THE BOLT HEAD AND THE SOUND SHIELD STRAP FOR PROPER GROUND. DO NOT PLACE THE GROUND CABLE EYELET BETWEEN THE SOUND SHIELD STRAP AND THE VEHICLE BODY.

3. Attach the other end of the ground cable under the sound shield bracket mounting bolt (Figure 3). Torque bolt to 26 lb-ft (35 N.m).
