Exhaust System: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Exhaust System

WARNING: The normal operating temperature of the exhaust system is very high. Never attempt to service any part of the system until it has cooled. Be especially careful when working around the three-way catalytic converter. The temperature of the three-way catalytic converter rises to a high level after only a few minutes of engine operation.

CAUTION: When servicing exhaust system or removing exhaust components, disconnect all heated oxygen sensors (HO2S) at the wiring connectors to prevent damage to the HO2S and wiring harness.

CAUTION: Do not use oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators. They may cause deterioration to the rubber.

CAUTION: Oil or grease-based lubricants on the isolators may cause the exhaust hanger isolator to separate from the exhaust hanger bracket during vehicle operation.

Exhaust fasteners are of a torque prevailing design. Use only new fasteners with the same part number as the original. Torque values must be used as specified during reassembly to make sure of correct retention of exhaust components.

The exhaust system:
^ contains dual 2-way catalytic converters and a single 3-way catalytic converter.
^ has a uniquely designed Y-pipe assembly with a damper.
^ has 2 upstream HO2S mounted in the exhaust manifolds.
^ has 2 catalyst monitor sensors mounted after the 2-way catalytic converters.
^ has a production muffler and resonator assembly which is a one-piece design.
