MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL) ON WITH
DTC P0455 OR P0457
FORD:
2005 Crown Victoria
MERCURY:
2005 Grand Marquis
ISSUE
Some 2005 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis vehicles built from 7/27/2004 to 9/2/2004 may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp or a Check Fuel Cap Lamp illuminated with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0455 (evaporative emission system leak detected - gross leak/no flow) or P0457 (evaporative emission system leak detected - fuel cap loose/off). This condition may be caused by the fuel cap retention strap becoming trapped between the fuel cap and the top of the filler neck when the fuel cap is being reinstalled, preventing a proper seal.
ACTION
Reposition the fuel cap retention strap to prevent it from being trapped under the cap during fuel cap installation. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check for DTC P0455 or P0457.
2. If the fuel cap retention strap is secured to the bolt at the 2:00 O'clock or 4:00 O'clock position, reposition it to the 10:00 O'clock position (Figure 1).
NOTE
FUEL RETENTION STRAPS LOCATED AT THE 2:00 O'CLOCK OR 4:00 O'CLOCK POSITION ARE TWISTED SO THE CAP WILL FACE OUTWARD AT REST. WHEN REPOSITIONING THE STRAP THE TWIST MUST BE REMOVED. FUEL CAPS WITH RETENTION STRAPS SECURED AT THE 10:00 O'CLOCK POSITION SHOULD FACE INWARD AT REST.
3. Ensure that the fuel cap is properly secured.
4. Record and clear DTC's and retest the system for leaks per Workshop Manual Section 303-13.
5. If during the retest a system leak is detected, refer to the Workshop Manual. If both DTCs exist follow diagnostics for P0457 first.
