MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LAMP (MIL)
ILLUMINATION - WIRE HARNESS CHAFING

FORD:
2004 Taurus

MERCURY:
2004 Sable

ISSUE

Some vehicles may exhibit an illuminated or blinking malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) with various DTC codes stored in memory. There may also be driveability conditions present and/or intermittent RPM fluctuations. These conditions may be due to the underside of the PCM wire harness (12B637) chafing on the cross car beam, where it rests on the bracket at the right side front strut turret.

ACTION

To service, repair any wire chafing conditions or replace the wiring harness if the damaged circuit is a shielded wire. Secure the PCM wire harness with a tie strap as directed per the Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

First verify the condition. If necessary, use a vehicle data recorder (VDR) to determine the affected circuits. It may be necessary to perform a wiggle test on the harness in the area of the right side cross car beam bracket to replicate the condition. If the MIL illuminates, use scan tool to retrieve the DTC's.

(Figure 1) illustrates the area where the 12B637 harness may be chafing against the bracket of the cross-car beam.

1. Disconnect battery.

2. Inspect the protective plastic wrap on the harness for wear or damage.

a. If damaged (torn or a perforation due to chafing), remove the plastic wrap from the harness and continue to Step 3.

b. If no damage is noted, refer to (PC/ED) and perform normal diagnostic procedures for the specific DTC found in memory. Repair as necessary, continue to Step 4.

3. Visually inspect all wires inside the harness's plastic wrap for damage to the wire circuit insulation.

NOTE
A MIRROR MAY AID INSPECTION.

a. Repair non shielded wire circuits by following procedures outlined in the Workshop Manual and TSB 01-10-12. The harness's plastic wrap may be repaired with convolute tubing. Proceed to Step 4.

b. If the damaged circuit is a shielded wire, the harness must be replaced. Proceed to step 4.

4. Secure harness with tie strap to cross car beam in new position shown (Figure 2).
