Power Locks: Description and Operation
HANDLES, LOCKS, LATCHES AND ENTRY SYSTEMSThe front door components consist of the following:
- door ajar switch
- door lock cylinder
- exterior door handle
- front door latch
- front door lock actuator
- front door lock push button rod
- interior door handle actuator cable
- interior door handle
The door ajar switch and the door lock actuator can be installed individually.
The rear door components consist of the following:
- door ajar switch
- exterior door handle
- interior door handle actuator cable
- interior door handle
- rear door latch
- rear door lock actuator
- rear door lock button push rod
The liftgate components consist of the following:
- door lock actuator
- liftgate handle
- liftgate latch
- liftgate latch remote control
- liftgate window glass latch
- lock cylinder
The luggage compartment lid components consists of the following:
- lock cylinder
- lock cylinder actuation cable
- mechanical emergency release cable and handle
- luggage compartment latch
If the liftgate handle is damaged, a new license plate housing must be installed.
Individual lock cylinders are repaired by discarding the inoperative lock cylinder and building a new lock cylinder using the appropriate lock repair package. The lock repair package includes a detailed instruction sheet to build the new lock cylinder to the current key code of the vehicle.
The remote transmitter initiates the following electronic system functions:
- unlocks the driver door
- unlocks all doors
- locks all doors
- activate/deactivate the panic alarm
- commands the interior lamps on (when unlocking) and off (when locking)
- sounds the horn once when LOCK is pressed twice within three seconds, and doors are closed
- sounds the horn twice when LOCK is pressed twice within three seconds, and any door is ajar
The remote transmitter has a minimum operating range of 10 m (33 feet).
The remote transmitter can be programmed using a diagnostic tool or by using the ignition lock cylinder method.
PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
The smart junction box (SJB) receives inputs and delivers outputs to many of the electronically controlled features of the vehicle. The SJB constantly monitors the system under its control and reports a concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Power Door Locks
Regardless of the key position, the SJB is powered at all times. When the SJB receives a signal from the remote transmitter or door lock control switch, the SJB supplies a ground signal to the appropriate lock or unlock relay. The ground signal closes the relay which supplies power to the door lock actuators. The door lock actuators will then actuate to a lock or unlock position determined by the relay power supplied on the lock or unlock circuit.
Autolocking
The autolocking feature locks all doors when all doors (including liftgate for wagon only) are closed, the key is in the RUN position, the transmission is in either a forward or reverse gear and vehicle speed is 5 km/h (3 mph) or higher. If any door becomes ajar, this feature will relock all doors when the ajar door is returned to a closed position and all previous conditions are met.
Luggage Compartment Lid Release
The luggage compartment lid release releases the luggage compartment lid when the customer requests it to be opened using either the remote transmitter or the interior luggage compartment release button (which is hardwired to the SJB). When the SJB receives a ground signal to release the luggage compartment lid, the SJB supplies a voltage to the luggage compartment lid actuator. The luggage compartment lid actuator then actuates to release the luggage compartment lid.
Keyless Entry
The keyless entry keypad is hardwired to the SJB. The SJB interprets the inputs from the keyless entry keypad and then controls the associated operation. The keyless entry keypad will be illuminated for 5 seconds when any button is pressed. Additionally, it will request the illuminated entry feature to turn the interior lamps on. If a lock all doors code is entered, the illumination will turn off, as well as request the illuminated entry feature to turn off the interior lamps. When pressed, the keyless entry keypad supplies the ground signal to the SJB or the SJB receives a signal from the remote transmitter. Then the SJB supplies voltage to the appropriate door lock actuator(s) to lock or unlocks the doors (including the liftgate for wagon only). The remote transmitter also releases the luggage compartment lid or activates the panic alarm by sending a signal to the SJB.
Smart Unlock
The smart unlock feature prevents the driver door from locking with the key in the ignition lock cylinder. When the SJB receives a LOCK command from a door lock control switch, and the key is in the ignition lock cylinder with the driver door open, the SJB commands the driver door to UNLOCK.
