Disassembly
1. CAUTION: Do not clamp the driveshaft in the jaws of a vise or a similar holding fixture.
Carefully place the driveshaft on a suitable workbench.
2. NOTE: Index-mark the driveshaft components relative to the driveshaft tube. Make sure all components are reassembled in the same relationship to maintain correct balance.
Index-mark the driveshaft and driveshaft components.
3. Remove the snap rings from the universal joint.
4. Using press plates, position the driveshaft so the universal joint spider supports the flange yoke or slip joint yoke.
5. NOTE: The bearing cup cannot be driven all the way out. Rotate the driveshaft when the universal joint spider contacts the yoke.
Using a brass hammer, strike the yoke in the area indicated to drive the bearing cup from the center of the yoke.
6. Rotate the driveshaft 180' to drive the opposing bearing cup outboard.
7. CAUTION: Drive only on the bearing cup when removing cups from the yoke.
Using a drift punch, remove the bearing cup from the universal joint yoke.
8. Rotate the driveshaft and tilt the universal joint spider to remove the universal joint from the yoke.
9. Using a drift punch, remove the universal joint bearing cup from the opposing side.
10. Repeat the procedure to remove the two remaining bearing cups and universal joint spider.
^ Inspect the driveshaft and driveshaft components for wear or damage.
Assembly
NOTE: Universal joint service kits are to be installed as complete assemblies only. Do not use components from other universal joints.
1. Clamp the special tool in a vise.
2. Install a new bearing cup.
^ Start a new bearing cup into the driveshaft yoke.
^ Position a new spider in the driveshaft yoke.
^ Install the driveshaft into the special tool.
^ Press the bearing cup below the yoke surface.
3. Remove the driveshaft from the special tool and install the snap ring.
4. CAUTION: Do not apply excessive pressure causing the opposite snap ring to damage the snap ring groove.
Repeat for the opposite side.
5. Install a new bearing cup.
1 Start a new bearing cup into the driveshaft centering socket yoke.
2 Install the driveshaft into the special tool.
3 Press the bearing cup below the yoke surface.
6. Remove the driveshaft from the special tool and install the snap ring.
7. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the opposite side.
8. NOTE: Do not strike the bearings. If binding, strike the yoke with a brass or plastic hammer.
Check the universal joint for freedom of movement.
