This article supersedes TSB 04-24-07 to update the part information.
ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit numerous anti-lock brake system (ABS) wheel speed sensor (WSS) DTCs, such as C1145, C1155, C1165, C1175, C1296, C1297, C1298, C1299 and C1222. This may be due to water intrusion into the 14290 harness.
ACTION
Install a dedicated ground wire to the ABS module. Remove water/moisture from the 14290 harness and ABS connection. In specific areas of the 14290 harness, it will be necessary to remove the tape surrounding the convolute, drain any moisture, create drain openings in the convolute, and reapply electrical tape leaving 1/2" (13 mm) spaces between the wrapping to facilitate water drainage. Refer to the following Service Procedure.
NOTE
BEFORE BEGINNING THIS REPAIR, FIRST DETERMINE IF THIS TSB HAS ALREADY BEEN PERFORMED. INSPECT PIN 12 OF THE ABS CONNECTOR (C135). IF THERE IS A NEW SEPARATE GROUND WIRE INSTALLED AND TIE STRAPPED TO THE 14290 HARNESS, THEN ORDER AND REPLACE THE 14290 HARNESS. PERFORM STEPS 6-12 ON THE NEW HARNESS PRIOR TO INSTALLING.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Verify that the vehicle has multiple wheel speed sensor codes. IF NOT, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB. FOLLOW NORMAL WORKSHOP MANUAL DIAGNOSTICS.
2. Verify that all tires are the same size as the original equipment.
3. Inspect connector C214 (under dash) for contaminants (such as soap residue). If contaminants are present, clean with Motorcraft Brake Parts Cleaner (PM-4) and dry out with shop air.
4. Inspect the ABS module connector (C135) for moisture and/or pin corrosion. If water or contaminants are present, clean the female side connector (harness side) with Motorcraft Brake Parts Cleaner (PM-4) and dry out with shop air. Only use shop air on the male side (ABS module side) of the connection to dry it out. DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEANER ON THE ABS MODULE. IF HEAVY CORROSION IS PRESENT ON THE ABS PINS, REPLACE THE ABS CONTROL MODULE.
5. Remove the tape from ABS take-out branch between the sub take-outs and the ABS connector (Figure 1). Drain any water. Reapply black electrical tape to the convolute leaving 1/2" (13 mm) spaces between the wrappings to facilitate water drainage.
NOTE
IF THIS TSB WAS PERFORMED PREVIOUSLY AND THE 14290 HARNESS IS NOW BEING REPLACED, THE GROUND WIRE PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED (IN STEP 7) MAY BE REUSED PROVIDING ITS TERMINAL IS NOT CORRODED.
6. Remove the back cover of the ABS connector (C135) and peel the convolute back from the connector. Remove the ground wire and terminal from the connector (Pin 12). Fold back the ground wire and terminal and tape to the harness. Reapply convolute with split on the bottom side of harness. Apply black electrical tape to the convolute leaving 1/2" spaces between the wrappings to facilitate water drainage. DO NOT REINSTALL THE CONNECTOR'S BACK COVER AT THIS POINT, COMPLETE STEPS 7 AND 8 FIRST.
7. Install a new dedicated ground wire with terminal (4W7Z-14A411-BB), into (C135 Pin 12).
8. Apply Motorcraft RTV Silicone Sealant (TA-31) to the back of the wires in the ABS connector (Figure 2). Prior to the silicone setting up, reinstall the back of the connector and reconnect to the ABS module. Push harness down along the side of the air box to create a drip loop (Figure 3).
9. Route the dedicated ground wire (from Step 7) along the 14290 harness securing with a tie strap at approximately 12" (30 cm) intervals. Attach the ground eyelet at G102 using the existing screw, (G102 is located on the right hand fender near the battery).
10. Gain access to the 14290 harness in the front of the vehicle by removing the splash covers from beneath the front bumper, on both front corners. Remove 4" (10 cm) of tape from the outside of the 14290 harness to gain access to the convolute (Figure 4). If water is present in the convolute, allow it to drain. Cut a slot into the convolute (creating a drain opening) 1/2" x 4" (13 mm x 10 cm) (BE CAREFUL TO NOT CUT OR DAMAGE ANY WIRES). Apply black electrical tape on each side of the drain opening to hold the wire bundle into the convolute, but still allowing the drain slot to remain open. Perform this to the 14290 harness on both front corners.
11. Reassemble the front end of the vehicle.
12. Run the ABS Self Test as a final check. If the vehicle fails to pass this test, proceed with normal diagnostics per the Workshop Manual
