Brake Shoe: Service and Repair

Shoes

Removal
1. Remove the brake drum.





2. Inspect the rear brake assembly for the following:
1 The rear wheel cylinder for leakage.
2 The rear brake shoes and linings for contamination, and install new as necessary.
3 The springs for heat discoloration and install new as necessary.
4 The adjusting lever contact with the brake adjuster screw.





3. Inspect the rear brake shoes and linings for minimum thickness, above the backing plate or rivets, and install new as necessary.





4. Remove the brake shoe adjusting screw spring.





5. Remove the brake adjuster lever.





6. Remove the brake adjuster screw.





7. Remove the brake shoe hold-down spring.





8. Remove the brake shoe and the retracting spring.





9. Remove the rear brake shoe hold-down spring.





10. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings.





11. Remove and discard the parking brake lever clip.





12. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings from the parking brake lever.

Installation
1. Follow the removal procedure in reverse order.
