Timing Cover: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Remove the LH valve cover.
3. Remove the RH valve cover.
4. Remove the power steering pump.
5. Remove the retaining nut and position the power steering pressure line and muffler out of the way.
6. Disconnect the alternator electrical connectors.
7. Remove the upper retaining bolts from the alternator.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Remove the bolts, nuts and the engine-to-transaxle bracket.
10. Remove the torque converter inspection cover.
11. Remove the front pin-type retainers and position the front rocker panel moulding aside.
12. Remove the rear portion of the front fender splash shield.
- Remove the screws and the pin-type retainers.
13. Remove the two screws and the alternator splash shield.
14. Install the Flywheel Holding Tool.
15. NOTE: The pulley bolt has a reverse thread.
Remove the crankshaft damper pulley.
16. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
17. Using the special tool, remove the crankshaft damper.
18. Remove the Flywheel Holding Tool.
19. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector. Remove the bolt and the CKP sensor.
20. Remove the alternator bolt and remove the alternator.
21. Lower the vehicle.
22. Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor to front cover bracket.
23. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector. Remove the bolt and remove the CMP sensor.
24. Remove the tie strap from the power steering hose.
25. Remove the retaining nut and position the A/C low pressure hose out of the way.
26. Remove the bolts and position the A/C high pressure hose on top of the belt tensioner.
27. Remove the bolt and remove the belt tensioner.
28. Disconnect the engine cooling fan electrical connector and unclip the wiring harness.
29. Remove the bolt and the engine cooling fan.
30. Install the special tools to support the engine.
31. Remove the two upper A/C compressor bolts.
32. Raise the vehicle.
33. Remove the two lower A/C compressor bolts and position the A/C compressor aside using the engine support tool.
34. Remove the bolts from the A/C bracket.
35. Remove the two oil pan front cover bolts.
36. Lower the vehicle.
37. Raise the engine away from the A/C bracket using the engine support tool.
38. Remove the bolts, studs and the engine front cover.
Installation
1. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs, or other means to clean the sealing surface. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of sealant.
Clean all sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner.
2. Install three new gaskets in the front cover.
3. NOTE: The engine front cover must be installed and the bolts tightened within six minutes of applying the sealant.
Apply a 6 mm (0.24 in.) diameter dot of gasket and sealer to the cylinder block to lower cylinder block and cylinder head mating surfaces.
4. NOTE: Fasteners No. 1 and 6 are studs.
Position the cover and install the bolts in the sequence shown.
5. Using the engine support tool, lower the engine back together with the A/C bracket.
6. Raise the vehicle.
7. Install the two oil pan front cover bolts.
8. Install the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts in two stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees.
9. Position the A/C compressor and install the two lower bolts.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Install the two upper A/C compressor bolts.
12. Remove the special tools.
13. Position the engine cooling fan and install the bolt.
14. Connect the engine cooling fan electrical connector and clip the wiring harness.
15. Position the belt tensioner and install the bolt.
16. Position the A/C high pressure hose and install the bolts.
17. Position the A/C low pressure hose and install the retaining nut.
18. Install the tie strap to the power steering hose.
19. Install the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and install the bolt. Connect the CMP sensor electrical connector.
20. Position the A/C compressor to front cover bracket, and install the bolts.
21. Raise the vehicle.
22. NOTE: The upper rear bolt is installed with the alternator.
Install the alternator and the lower bolt.
23. Install the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector.
24. Lower the vehicle.
25. Install the alternator upper bolts.
26. Connect the electrical connectors.
27. Reposition the power steering line and muffler and install the retaining nut.
28. Raise the vehicle.
29. Tighten the alternator lower bolt.
30. Install the flywheel holding tool.
31. NOTE: Seal surfaces must be free of dirt and oil.
Apply silicone gasket and sealant to the keyway slot.
32. NOTE: Lubricate the outside diameter sealing surface of the crankshaft pulley with clean motor oil.
Using the special tool, install the crankshaft damper.
33. Install the bolt and washer and tighten in four stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 120 Nm (89 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 2: Loosen 360 degrees.
- Stage 3: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
- Stage 4: Tighten 90 degrees.
34. NOTE: The pulley has reverse threads.
Install the crankshaft pulley.
35. Remove the Flywheel Holding Tool.
36. Install the alternator splash shield and the two screws.
37. Install the rear portion of the front fender splash shield. Install the screws and the pin-type retainers.
38. Position the front rocker panel moulding and install the pin-type retainers.
39. Install the torque converter inspection cover.
40. Position the engine-to-transaxle bracket and install the nuts and bolts.
41. Lower the vehicle.
42. Install the RH valve cover.
43. Install the LH valve cover.
44. Connect the battery ground cable.
45. Install the power steering pump.
