Front Seat Backrest






SPECIAL TOOL(S)

DISASSEMBLY

WARNING:
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- AFTER DEPLOYMENT, THE AIR BAG SURFACE CAN CONTAIN DEPOSITS OF SODIUM HYDROXIDE, A PRODUCT OF THE GAS GENERANT COMBUSTION THAT IS IRRITATING TO THE SKIN. WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP AND WATER AFTERWARDS.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.


NOTE: Driver side shown, passenger side similar.

All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable and wait at least one minute.

WARNING: TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.

THE SIDE IMPACT SENSORS ARE LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT, BENEATH THE CARPET.

TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).


Vehicles with seat side air bags
2. Deactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

All vehicles
3. Remove the affected seat.

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE FRONT SEAT REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURE.

4. Remove the front seat backrest.







5. Pull the head restraint out to end of travel. Press the release button and the pull head restraint rod past its stop position.







6. Remove the two screws, pull the bottom out and lift up to remove the backrest panel.







7. Release the four J-clips (three shown).
8. Invert the seat backrest cover to the top of the seat backrest.







9. From inside the seat backrest, pinch the headrest guide pin ends and remove the sleeves. Remove the seat backrest cover.

Police vehicles







10. Remove the head restraint locking clip (outboard side driver, inboard side passenger).







11. Pull the head restraint out to end of travel. Press the release button and then pull the head restraint rod past its stop position.







12. From inside the seat backrest, pinch the headrest guide pin ends and remove the sleeves. Remove the seat backrest cover.

Vehicles with heated seats







13. Remove the seat backrest foam pad and remove the heated seat element, if necessary.

Vehicles with seat side air bags







14. Remove the side air bag module nuts.

NOTE: Install new side air bag nuts if installing a new side air bag module. If the existing side air bag is being reinstalled, retain the existing nuts.







15. Position the side air bag module and deployment chute away from the mounting bracket and seat back frame.







16. Position the seat back trim cover and seat back pad forward enough to access the side air bag module.







17. Remove the side air bag module from the deployment chute.
- Pull the side air bag module mounting studs back through the deployment chute openings and remove the side air bag module from the deployment chute.







18. Disconnect and remove the side air bag module.
1 Slide the side air bag module electrical connector locking clip to disengage it.
2 Release the two connector tabs (one shown) by pushing in on them and disconnect the side air bag module.
3 Remove the side air bag module.

Vehicles with power lumbar







19. Detach the lumbar motor bracket clip.







20. Disconnect the electrical connector.







21. Detach the two lumbar support bracket clips and slide the lumbar assembly up and off.

Marauder







22. Remove the three lower clips on the seat back support spring and unclip the top hook.

NOTE: When removing the three lower support spring clips they must be replaced.

ASSEMBLY

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, AND NOTES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE.

Marauder







1. Install the top hook and install the three lower seat back support spring clips.

Vehicles with power lumbar







2. Slide the lumbar support bracket and lumbar assembly on lumbar seat frame until seated on the two clips.







3. Connect the electrical connector.
4. Install the lumbar motor and attach the lumbar motor bracket clip.

Vehicles with seat side air bags

WARNING:
- CHECK THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE FOR DAMAGE. THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND ZIPPER MUST NOT BE REPAIRED IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE. THE SEAT BACK TRIM COVER AND DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST BE INSTALLED NEW AS A UNIT. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- THE DEPLOYMENT SEAM CANNOT BE REPAIRED OR RESEWN. A TRIM COVER REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE BOLSTER OR SIDE FACING MUST BE REPLACED AS A UNIT.
- IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE IS NOT CORRECTLY POSITIONED AND COMPLETELY ZIPPED, THE SIDE AIR BAG CANNOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.
- ALWAYS WEAR SAFETY GLASSES WHEN REPAIRING AN AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) VEHICLE AND WHEN HANDLING AN AIR BAG MODULE. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- CARRY A LIVE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TEAR SEAM POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
- NEVER PROBE THE CONNECTORS ON THE AIR BAG MODULE. DOING SO CAN RESULT IN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHICH CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY.


CAUTION: When installing the seat backrest trim panel, be careful not to damage the J-hooks. If the J-hooks are damaged, the seat backrest trim panel must be replaced.

NOTE: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats with side air bags cannot be repaired. The front seat backrest trim covers are to be installed new. Cleaning is possible.







5. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.
1 Connect the side air bag module electrical connector.
2 Slide the side air bag module electrical connector locking clip to secure the connector to the side air bag module.







6. Position the side air bag module into the deployment chute.
- Position the side air bag module into the deployment chute with the alignment pin offset to the top and the electrical connector to the bottom of the seat back. This will position the alignment pin correctly when the side air bag module and deployment chute are mounted to the seat back frame mounting bracket.
- The side air bag module mounting studs and alignment pin must come through the deployment chute stud openings.

WARNING:
- INSPECT THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY, IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- INSPECT THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE AND THE SIDE AIR BAG CAVITY IN THE SEAT BACK PAD FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY, IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE INTO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE, CHECK IT FOR DAMAGE AND FOREIGN OBJECTS. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE IS DAMAGED, REPLACE IT. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY, IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- IF THE AIR BAG COVER HAS SEPARATED OR THE AIR BAG MATERIAL HAS BEEN EXPOSED, INSTALL A NEW SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REPAIR THE AIR BAG MODULE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY, IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.
- CHECK THE SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE FOR DAMAGE. THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST NOT BE REPAIRED. IF THERE IS ANY DAMAGE TO THE DEPLOYMENT CHUTE, THE SEAT BACK TRIM COVER AND DEPLOYMENT CHUTE MUST BE INSTALLED NEW AS A UNIT.
- IF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT CHUTE IS NOT PROPERLY POSITIONED, THE SIDE AIR BAG MAY NOT DEPLOY PROPERLY.


NOTE: The alignment pin will only allow the side air bag module to be installed to the seat back mounting bracket one way.







7. Install the side air bag module onto the front seat back frame mounting bracket. Install the nuts.
- The deployment chute should not have any wrinkles or folds where it contacts the seat back frame mounting bracket.

WARNING: INSPECT THE MOUNTING SURFACES OF THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE AND THE SEAT BACK FRAME MOUNTING BRACKET FOR ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS BEFORE INSTALLING THE SIDE AIR BAG MODULE. IF ANY FOREIGN OBJECTS ARE FOUND, REMOVE THEM. FAILURE TO DO SO CAN RESULT IN PERSONAL INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT.

Vehicles with heated seats







8. Install the backrest heated seat element to the foam pad (if necessary) and install the foam pad on the frame.

Police vehicles







9. Install the seat backrest trim cover and install the head restraint sleeves and the locking clip.

All vehicles







10. Reposition the seat back pad and trim cover to the seat back frame.







11. Install the head restraint sleeves.







12. Attach the four J-clips (three shown).







13. Install the upper J-hooks and install the two bottom seat backrest panel screws.

All vehicles







14. Install the head restraint.
15. Install the front seat backrest.
16. Install the affected seat.

Vehicles with seat side air bags
17. Reactivate the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: TO REDUCE THE RISK OF SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY, READ AND FOLLOW ALL WARNINGS, CAUTIONS, NOTES, AND INSTRUCTIONS IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) DEACTIVATION/REACTIVATION PROCEDURE.

All vehicles
18. With all the restraint system diagnostic tools removed, prove out the supplemental restraint system (SRS).

WARNING: THE RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOL IS FOR RESTRAINT SYSTEM SERVICE ONLY. REMOVE FROM THE VEHICLE PRIOR TO ROAD USE. FAILURE TO REMOVE COULD RESULT IN INJURY AND POSSIBLE VIOLATION OF VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS.
