Removal
All vehicles
1. Place the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position.
2. Remove the battery.
3. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.
4. Remove the engine air cleaner.
5. Remove the air filter assembly.
6. Disconnect the connectors.
7. Disconnect the connector.
8. Remove the power steering line bracket.
9. Remove the electrical connector bracket.
10. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.
11. Install the 3 Bar Engine Support.
3.0L 4V engines
12. Remove the upper cowl assembly.
1. Remove the wiper.
2. Remove the clips.
3. Remove the upper cowl assembly.
13. Remove the lower cowl assembly.
14. Remove the rear support brace.
1. Remove the bolt.
2. Remove the nut.
3. Remove the rear support brace.
15. Install the rear engine lifting bracket in the same location where the top bolt was removed from the rear support brace.
3.0L 2V engines
16. Install the engine lifting bracket on the right (back) hand side of the engine.
17. Install the engine lifting bracket on the left (front) hand side of the engine.
3.0L 4V engines
18. Remove the nut for the cooling tube.
19. Install the engine lifting bracket.
All vehicles
20. Raise the vehicle.
21. Remove the LH wheel and tire.
22. Remove the LH front fender splash shield upper screws.
23. Remove the LH front fender splash shield.
^ Remove one screw, one pushpin and the shield.
24. Remove the LH transaxle support and insulator.
25. For vehicles without the structural side pan, remove the rear engine support bracket.
1. Remove the bolts.
2. Remove the rear engine support bracket.
26. Position a drain pan under the transaxle side pan.
27. For vehicles with structure side pan, remove mount.
28. NOTE: It will be necessary to lower the left side of the subframe to remove the pan through the wheel well.
NOTE: The structural pan is shown, the stamped pan is similar and has the same bolt pattern.
Remove the bolts and remove the transaxle side pan and gasket.
29. CAUTION: Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result.
Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors.
30. Position the transaxle wiring harness out of the way.
31. CAUTION: Do not remove the two bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body.
CAUTION: Only 4 of the 6 pump cover bolts need to be removed.
Remove the bolts.
32. Disconnect the manual linkage.
33. Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Install the pump assembly and main control valve body onto the pump shaft.
2. Rotate the pump assembly and main control valve body to connect the manual valve link with the manual valve.
3. CAUTION: Do not use the bolts to draw pump assembly and near control valve body onto the chain cover case. Component damage may occur.
Install retaining bolt and tighten in sequence.
4. Install the transaxle wire harness retaining clip into the separator plate.
5. Connect the electrical connectors.
3.0L 4V engines
6. NOTE: The transaxle side cover gasket is reusable if not tom or ripped.
For vehicles equipped with a structural side pan, remove the gasket. Clean and inspect the gasket, reinstall gasket onto the pan.
7. For vehicles equipped with a structural side pan, install the pan.
8. For vehicles equipped with a structural side pan, install the mount.
3.0L 2V engines
9. NOTE: The transaxle side cover gasket is reusable if not tom or ripped.
Clean and inspect the gasket.
10. Install the gasket onto the pan.
11. Install the pan.
12. For vehicles without the structural side pan, install the rear engine support bracket and bolts.
All vehicles
13. NOTE: It will be necessary to reinstall the left side of the subframe.
Install the LH transaxle support and insulator.
14. Install the LH front fender splash shield, screw, and pushpin.
15. Install the LH front fender splash shield screws.
16. Install the LH wheel and tire.
17. Lower the vehicle.
3.0L 4V engines
18. Remove the Engine Lifting Bracket.
19. Install the rear support brace.
1. Install the rear support brace.
2. Install the bolt.
3. Install the nut.
20. Install the lower cowl assembly.
21. Install the wiper.
1. Install the upper cowl assembly.
2. Install the clips.
3. Install the wiper.
22. Remove the engine lining bracket.
23. Install the nut for the cooling tube.
3.0L 2V engines
24. Remove the LH engine lifting bracket.
25. Remove the RH engine lifting bracket.
26. Remove the special tools.
All vehicles
27. Reconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.
28. Install the electrical connector bracket.
29. Install the power steering line bracket.
30. Reconnect the connector.
31. Reconnect the connector.
32. Install the air filter assembly.
33. Install the engine air cleaner.
34. Reconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.
35. Reinstall the battery.
36. Fill the transaxle assembly with one quart of MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-S-QM or equivalent meeting MERCON V specification.
37. Start the engine. Move the transaxle range selector lever through an positions. Check the fluid level.
