Initial Inspection - Electronic Cluster

1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.

Visual Inspection Chart:

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.
3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
4. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the Data Link Connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
- check that the program card is correctly installed.
- check the connections to the vehicle.
- check the ignition switch position.
5. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.
6. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS TEST. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
- CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Module Communications Network (Information Bus).
- NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for Lighting Control Module (LCM), refer to Multifunction Electronic Control Module (General Module).
- SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the LCM.
7. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the LCM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics. Trouble Code Diagnostic Charts - Instrument Panel Illumination
8. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics. Diagnosis By Symptom - Electronic Cluster

Instrument Cluster Self-Test
To enter the instrument cluster self-test press E/M and SELECT buttons simultaneously while turning the ignition switch from OFF to ON. If the instrument cluster flashes on and off continuously, INSTALL a new instrument cluster.

If the instrument cluster displays:
- only the top and bottom two coolant temperature gauge display bars: diagnose the coolant temperature gauge system.
- only the top and bottom two fuel gauge display bars: diagnose the fuel gauge system.
- only the bottom engine temperature gauge display bar: diagnose the engine temperature gauge system.
- CS or CO, diagnose the fuel level sender input circuitry.
- error in the odometer display, diagnose the speedometer/odometer circuitry.
