Timing Cover: Service and Repair
Engine Front CoverRemoval
1. Remove the right-hand valve cover.
2. Remove the left-hand valve cover.
3. Remove the oil pan.
4. Remove the generator.
5. Remove the power steering pump.
6. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor and the left-hand Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors.
^ Detach the wiring harness retainer and position the harness to one side.
8. Remove the sensors.
1. The CKP sensor.
2. The CMP sensor.
9. NOTE: Remove the bolts and studs in the indicated sequence.
Remove the engine front cover and discard the gaskets.
Installation
1. Prior to applying silicone gasket and sealant, clean the front cover to cylinder block and cylinder head sealing surfaces.
2. NOTE: Install the engine front cover within six minutes of applying silicone gasket and sealant.
Apply a 6 mm dot of silicone gasket and sealant to the indicated locations.
3. NOTE:
^ The engine front cover must be installed in a two step sequence.
^ Locating dowels and the locations of the studs.
Install the engine front cover.
^ Use new gaskets.
^ Install the bolts and studs in the indicated sequence and tighten in two steps.
^ First tighten the seven bolts and studs one quarter turn (90 degrees after the engine front cover contacts the cylinder block and the cylinder heads.
4. NOTE: Tighten the bolts and studs in the indicated sequence.
Install the remaining bolts and studs.
5. NOTE: Lightly lubricate the new O-ring seals with engine oil before installation.
Install the CMP and CKP sensors.
6. Connect the CMP sensor and left hand HO2S electrical connectors.
^ Position the wiring harness and attach the retainer.
7. Connect the CKP sensor electrical connector and attach the retainer.
8. Install the power steering pump.
9. Install the generator.
10. Install the oil pan.
11. Install the right-hand valve cover.
12. Install the left-hand valve cover.
