Seats Not Removed

There are two deactivation procedures.
^ One procedure requires removal of the front seats. This procedure will be used when diagnosing side air bag or safety belt pretensioner concerns, and also when repairing any in-seat component.
^ The other procedure does not require front Seat removal. This procedure will be used when diagnosing a concern not related to the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS).

1. Move and tilt the front seats to their highest and rearmost position.

WARNING: THE AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC TOOLS MUST BE REMOVED AND THE AIR BAG MODULES RECONNECTED WHEN THE SYSTEM IS REACTIVATED TO AVOID NON-DEPLOYMENT IN A COLLISION, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY.

NOTE:
^ If a seat equipped with a seat mounted side airbag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the airbag system must be deactivated. Refer to Air Bag Systems
^ Airbag simulators (restraint system diagnostic tools) MUST be installed under the seats in the side airbag and safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) to floor connectors.
^ Diagnostics or repairs are not to be performed on a side airbag system and/or safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) with the seats in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side airbag system and/or safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) the seats must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the side airbag and the safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) connectors at the floor connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
^ Diagnostics may be performed on seat systems other than the side airbag or the safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system (lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic tools are installed under the seats in the side airbag and safety belt pretensioner to floor connectors.
^ After diagnosing/repairing a seat system the restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed before operating the vehicle over the road.

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.

WARNING:
^ TO AVOID ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY, THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY MUST BE DEPLETED BEFORE REPAIRING OR REPLACING ANY FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM (SRS) COMPONENTS AND BEFORE SERVICING, REPLACING, ADJUSTING OR STRIKING COMPONENTS NEAR THE FRONT OR SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS, SUCH AS DOORS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, CONSOLE, DOOR LATCHES, STRIKERS, SEATS AND HOOD LATCHES.
^ PLEASE REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE COMPONENT OR SYSTEM TO DETERMINE LOCATION OF THE FRONT AIR BAG SENSORS.
^ THE SIDE AIR BAG SENSORS ARE LOCATED AT OR NEAR THE BASE OF THE B-PILLAR.
^ TO DEPLETE THE BACKUP POWER SUPPLY ENERGY, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY GROUND CABLE AND WAIT AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. BE SURE TO DISCONNECT AUXILIARY BATTERIES AND POWER SUPPLIES (IF EQUIPPED).

3. Wait at least one minute for the backup power supply in the Restraints Control Module (RCM) to deplete its stored energy.
4. Access the four-pin driver air bag electrical connector behind the lower steering column opening cover.
5. Disconnect the four-pin driver air bag electrical connector.
6. Attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-F403 to the vehicle harness side of the clockspring connector.
7. Remove the passenger air bag. For additional information refer to Air Bag.

WARNING:
^ CARRY A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE WITH THE AIR BAG AND TRIM COVER POINTED AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.
^ DO NOT SET A LIVE AIR BAG MODULE DOWN WITH THE TRIM COVER FACE DOWN. THIS WILL REDUCE THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENTAL DEPLOYMENT.

8. Attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-F403 to the harness side of the passenger air bag connector.
9. Vehicles with side air bags, disconnect the passenger side air bag connector beneath the front seat.

CAUTION:
^ Vehicles without side air bags, do not deactivate the side air bag module circuit by removing the side air bag bridge resistor from the side air bag floor connector.
^ If the side air bag bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the Restraints Control Module (RCM).
^ If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the side air bag floor connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.

10. Vehicles with side air bags, attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-133 to the passenger side air bag floor connector.
11. Disconnect the safety belt pretensioner connector beneath the passenger front seat.
12. Attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-F407 to the ten-pin floor connector beneath the front passenger seat.

NOTE: The restraint system diagnostic tools for the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioners are similar but not interchangeable. To avoid incorrect test results, make sure to install the correct tool in the correct connector.

13. Vehicles with side air bags, disconnect the side air bag connector beneath the driver seat.

14. Vehicles with side air bags, attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-133 to the driver side air bag floor connector.
15. Disconnect the safety belt pretensioner connector beneath the driver seat.
16. Attach restraint system diagnostic tool 418-F405 to the ten-pin floor connector beneath the driver seat.

NOTE: The restraint system diagnostic tools for the driver and passenger safety belt pretensioners are similar but not interchangeable. To avoid incorrect test results, make sure to install the correct tool in the correct connector.

17. Reconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
