Attachment III - Technical Information

OVERVIEW

This procedure provides the instruction to install a jumper harness in the brake lamp circuit for the center high mount stop lamp (CHMSL) located in the spoiler. There are two groups of vehicles involved in this program: those with factory-installed spoilers and those with dealer-installed spoilers. Vehicles with dealer-installed spoilers are also equipped with a package tray-mounted CHMSL. This lamp must be permanently disabled to satisfy certain Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open the decklid and remove the decklid trim panel.

NOTE:

^ Figure 1 shows the decklid wiring for vehicles equipped with a FACTORY-INSTALLED spoiler. The connector for the CHMSL is on a take-out coming oft the main decklid wire harness.

^ Figure 2 shows the decklid wiring for vehicles equipped with a DEALER-INSTALLED spoiler. This is indicated by the additional spoiler wire harness.

2. Disconnect the center high mount stop lamp (CHMSL) electrical connectors and install the jumper harness between the two connectors. See Figures 1 and 2.

3. Using electrical tape, secure the jumper to the existing decklid wire harness.

4. Reinstall the decklid trim panel.

5. For vehicles equipped with a package tray-mounted CHMSL, proceed to the next step. If not, go to BRAKE LAMP FUNCTIONAL TEST.

CAUTION
THE FOLLOWING STEPS ONLY APPLY TO VEHICLES WITH SPOILER-MOUNTED STOP LAMPS THAT ALSO HAVE A PACKAGE TRAY-MOUNTED STOP LAMP.

6. From inside the trunk, remove the trim panel from under the package tray.

NOTE:
You may find either one or both sockets intact at the lamp assembly.

7. Locate the package tray-mounted CHMSL and remove the bulb socket(s).

CAUTION
Do not cut the spoiler wire harness.

8. Cut off and discard the socket(s). Using electrical tape, insulate each wire by taping it back to the harness. See Figure 3.

9. Reinstall the trim panel.

10. Proceed to BRAKE LAMP FUNCTIONAL TEST.

BRAKE LAMP FUNCTIONAL TEST

All of the following conditions must be met to complete this repair:

1. The tail/brake lamps and the spoiler CHMSL must operate when the service brakes are applied.

2. Only the rear tail lamps and the front turn signal lamps should operate when the hazard flashers are activated (the CHMSL MUST NOT OPERATE during hazard flasher operation).

3. The package tray-mounted CHMSL MUST NOT OPERATE under any conditions.
