Special Tools






Removal

1. Remove the LH camshafts. Camshaft






2. Remove the camshaft followers.






3. Remove the hydraulic adjusters.






4. Using the engine support tool, lower the engine onto the A/C bracket.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.






6. Install the A/C bracket bolts in the sequence shown,
7. Lower the vehicle.






8. Remove the special tools.






9. Disconnect the mass airflow sensor electrical connector.






10. Remove the two air cleaner housing bolts.






11. Lift the air cleaner housing off the locating pin.
12. Remove the battery tray. Service and Repair

Warning: To avoid personal injury, do not unscrew the coolant pressure relief cap while the engine is operating or hot. The cooling system is under pressure; steam and hot liquid can come out forcefully when the cap is loosened slightly.

Caution: The coolant must be recovered in a suitable, clean container for reuse. If the coolant is contaminated it must be recycled or disposed of correctly.

Note: Less than 80% of coolant capacity can be recovered with the engine in the vehicle. Dirty, rusty or contaminated coolant requires replacement.






13. Remove the coolant pressure relief cap.
14. Remove the LH exhaust manifold. Exhaust Manifold






15. Secure the rear exhaust converter to the subframe.






16. Remove the jackstand from the under the exhaust system.






17. Place a suitable container below the radiator draincock.
- Open the draincock and allow to drain.
- Close the radiator draincock when finished.
18. Lower the vehicle.






19. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and engine vent hose.






20. Disconnect the transmission 10-pin connector.






21. Remove the radiator bypass hose assembly.






22. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, water temperature sender, heater water hose and harness locator pin from the bypass tube.






23. Remove the bolt and stud, remove the water pump bypass tube.






24. Disconnect the heater water hose from the bottom of the water pump.






25. Remove the three bolts, and detach the water pump.






26. Disconnect the connector hose, and the water pump.
27. Disconnect the fuel line spring lock coupling. Fuel Line Coupler






28. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.






29. Remove the bolts in the sequence shown, and remove the lower intake manifold.
30. Remove and inspect the gasket from the lower intake manifold.






31. Remove the bolt and the oil indicator tube,






32. Remove the cylinder block coolant drain plug.

Note: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.






33. Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the cylinder head
- Discard the gasket and the bolts.

Note: The straightedge used must be flat within 0.0051 mm ( 0.0002 in ) per foot of tool length.

34. Support the cylinder head on a bench with the head gasket side up. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge and feeler gauge. The cylinder head must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm ( 0.001 in ) across a 38.1 mm ( 1.5 in ) square area, or scratches more than 0.0254 mm ( 0.001 in ) deep.
