Installation
NOTE: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
1. CAUTION: The torque converter is heavy. Install the special tool before raising the transaxle.
CAUTION: The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the whole installation procedure.
NOTE: The torque converter studs must be aligned with the flywheel holes before any transaxle to engine bolts are installed.
Install the special tool (if not installed yet).
2. NOTE: The torque converter hub must engage fully in the oil pump drive gear.
Check the installation depth of the torque converter.
1. Lay a steel straightedge on the automatic transaxle flange.
2. Check the installation depth between the transaxle flange and the torque converter centering spigot for the correct clearance: 12 mm
3. Apply a thin layer of High-temperature grease meeting Ford Specification ESD-M1C220-A or equivalent to the centering spigot bore on the torque converter.
4. Using the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack and the CD4E transaxle adapter raise and position the transaxle into place.
^ Remove the special tool 307-346.
5. Screw in all transaxle to engine bolts.
6. Tighten the transaxle to engine bolts on the left-hand side.
7. Connect the main control cover vent tube.
8. Tighten the flange bolts on the right-hand side.
9. Connect the torque converter to the engine drive plate (four nuts) and install the plastic cover.
CAUTION: To avoid to damage halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
10. NOTE: Do not damage the oil seal.
Install the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
11. NOTE: Install a new snap ring. Do not damage the oil seal.
Install the left-hand halfshaft.
^ Check that the snap ring engages correctly.
12. Position and install the transaxle cooler upper line.
13. Position and install the transaxle cooler lower line.
14. NOTE: Do not tighten the bolt.
Install the rear support insulator through bolt.
15. Install the starter motor.
^ Install the ground cable.
16. Connect the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor - if equipped.
17. NOTE: Install harness from transaxle.
Connect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector (shown from below).
18. CAUTION: Support the subframe using Powertrain Lift. Place wooden block approximately 40 inches in length secured to lift under sub-frame.
NOTE: Do not tighten the bolts.
Install the sub-frame.
19. Install the transaxle cooler line brackets, and bolt.
20. Install the power steering hoses to the subframe (one nut and two bolts).
21. Using the special tool, install the steering gear (two bolts) (left-hand side shown).
22. Install the steering gear heat shield.
23. Install the steering intermediate shaft.
25. Using the special tool, align the subframe and tighten the bolts.
1. Install the special tools and align the subframe with the locating holes h1 the body.
2. Install the subframe bolt, working diagonally.
26. Remove the left-hand support insulator and install the special tool.
1. Install the special tool.
2. Install the bolts.
3. Install the through bolt.
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. CAUTION: Do not twist or strain the rear engine mounting brackets.
Tighten the nuts on the rear engine mounting brackets.
29. Raise and support the vehicle.
30. Install the right-hand engine support insulator.
31. Tighten the rear support insulator through bolt.
32. Remove special tool 502-003 and install the left-hand support isolator.
1. Install the through bolt.
2. Install the bolts.
33. CAUTION: Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring
Connect the lower suspension arm ball joints and the stabilizer link rods.
^ Attach the ABS wiring harness bracket to the suspension strut.
34. CAUTION: Extreme extension of the flexible tube can lead to damages.
Install the flexible tube and the rear Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
^ Install the new gaskets.
^ Remove the protection collar.
35. Install the cable ties from the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) connector.
^ Install the Cable ties.
Vehicles with air conditioning
36. Install the suction accumulator bracket bolts.
All Vehicles
37. Install the bumper brackets on both sides (left-hand side shown).
38. Install the right-hand fender splash shields.
39. Install the radiator splash shield (nine bolts) and attach the bracket on each side (left-hand side shown).
40. Lower the vehicle.
41. Install both front wheels (right hand side shown).
42. Connect the selector cable to the transaxle.

43. Connect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector (shown from below).
^ Clip the cable.
44. Tighten the upper flange bolts.
^ Install the starter motor cable bracket.
45. Remove the special tools.
46. Connect the electrical connections.

2. Automatic transaxle control electrical connector
3. Transmission Range (TR) switch electrical connector
4. Wiring harness retaining clip
47. NOTE: Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
Tighten the suspension strut locknuts (right-hand side shown).
48. Tighten the suspension strut locknuts with a torque wrench (right-hand side shown).
49. Remove the radiator supports.

50. Fill the transaxle with MERCON(R) multi-purpose automatic transmission tepid. MERCON(R) Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON(R) V as a service fluid, as per TSB 06-14-4.
51. Check that the selector lever position indicator agrees with the transaxle operation.
^ Parking lock in selector lever position "P", reverse gear in selector lever position "R" and forward in selector lever position "D".
52. If the selector lever position indicator does not agree with the transaxle operation in all settings:
^ Raise the vehicle and disconnect the head shield (four clips).
53. NOTE: The mark line up in position "D". There is no need to hold after engaging a gear as there is an integral detent mechanism.
Move the selector lever to position "D".
1. Prevent the selector cable horn turning.
2. Disconnect the selector cable adjusting cap.
3. Move the selector lever to position "D".
54. Adjust the selector lever scale position.
^ Remove the selector lever nuts.
55. NOTE: The selector lever has if own detent mechanism. Holding the selector lever is not necessary.
Slide the whole selector assembly forwards or backwards until the reading on the scale and the position of the selector lever indicator corresponds.
56. Tighten the selector lever nuts.
57. Install the Air Cleaner (ACL)
1. Tighten the clamp.
2. Connect the IAT-Sensor and the MAF-Sensor electrical connectors.
3. Connect the vent hose.
4. Fix the retaining rubber.
5. Connect the air hose.
58. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
Install the battery.
