Band Apply Servo: Service and Repair

Overdrive Servo





Removal

NOTE: Servicing the intermediate and overdrive servo in the vehicle is only recommended in the event of a leak. If servicing is required due to a servo condition, it is necessary to remove and disassemble the transaxle to inspect the intermediate and overdrive band assembly and direct clutch for damage.

1. Raise and support the vehicle.





2. WARNING: The servo is under pressure.

WARNING: The servo and servo cover are under high spring force. Use caution when removing the servo cover. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Assemble the special tool.





3. CAUTION: Use only snap ring pliers to install the retaining ring. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the case.

Using the special tool. remove the servo assembly.
1. Install the special tool.
2. Compress the servo assembly by tightening the bolt.
3. Remove the retaining ring.
4. Remove the servo cover assembly.
5. Remove the intermediate and overdrive servo piston and return spring.
6. Using a lint free cloth wipe the servo piston and servo cap cover.

7. CAUTION: Do not use cleaning solvent to clean the rubber sealing surfaces of the servo piston or servo cover cap. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the sealing surfaces.

NOTE: CHECK for damage in the area where the servo piston connects to the servo rod.

Inspect the servo piston for cracks to the pressure and sealing surfaces.

8. NOTE: If the lip of the servo piston is brittle install a new servo piston.

CHECK the servo piston lip.

9. Inspect the servo retainer spring for cracks, breaks or deformation.

Installation





1. WARNING: Servo return spring force is very high. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

Assemble the special tool.





2. Install the special tool.





3. CAUTION: If the case is stamped with a WG, install a wide groove snap ring. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the servo.

CAUTION: Use only snap ring pliers to install the retaining ring. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the case.

NOTE: If the servo cover will not seat deep enough in the bore to install the servo cover retaining ring, use a blunt punch or small hammer and gently tap the cover around the outer edge until the servo cover retaining ring can be installed.

Tighten the special tool bolt.
^ Install the retaining ring.





4. Loosen the special tool bolt.
^ When spring tension is released remove the special tool.

5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Check the fluid level prior to road testing.
