Muffler: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Raise and support the vehicle.





2. Support the exhaust system with a suitable jack stand.
3. Remove the left side rear suspension control arm(s).





4. Remove the nuts and separate the three-way converter from the dual converter Y-pipe. Discard the gasket.





5. Note: To ease the removal and installation of the exhaust components, lubricate insulators using Silicone Lubricant Aerosol F5AZ-19553-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M13P4-A.

Detach the exhaust hanger insulators from the exhaust and remove the muffler and three-way catalytic converter from the vehicle.

6. Install the muffler pipe into a vise and remove the clamp. While heating the muffler pipe, separate the three-way catalytic converter from the muffler pipe.

Installation





1. Install a new gasket into the Y-pipe flange. Install the three-way catalytic converter studs into the Y-pipe flange and tighten the nuts.
- Support with a suitable jack stand.





2. Connect the muffler to the three-way catalytic converter and install the insulators.
- Remove the jack stand.





3. Install the exhaust clamp and tighten the nuts.
4. Install the left rear suspension control arm(s).
- Check and, if necessary, adjust the alignment.
5. Lower the vehicle.
