REVISED CAMSHAFT INSPECTION

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
CERTAIN 2000 TAURUS/SABLE AND RANGER WITH 3.0L (2V) VULCAN

OVERVIEW

Vehicle and engine build dates have been revised. Also, additional inspection points have been added to the original inspection. This flow chart provides an overview of the revised inspection procedure. Please refer to the instructions for details.

INSPECT THE REVISED VEHICLE BUILD DATE

1. Taurus/Sable Built at the Atlanta plant 2/1/00 through 2/3/00.

2. Taurus/Sable built at the Chicago plant 1/28/00 through 2/3/00.

3. Ranger built at the Edison and Twin City plants 1/31/00 through 2/3/00.

INSPECT THE REVISED ENGINE BUILD DATE ON THE ENGINE CODE TAG

1. Inspect the engine build date on the engine code tag located on the left valve cover. If the engine build date is 1/27/00 through 2/2/00, the engine is suspect. Inspect the engine serial number. See Figure 1.

INSPECT THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE ENGINE CODE TAG

1. Inspect the serial number on the engine code tag. See Figure 1.

^ 346790 or lower is a good engine

^ 346791 or higher, inspect the water pump housing

INSPECT THE SYMBOL ON THE WATER PUMP

1. Inspect the symbol on the right-hand side of the water pump housing. See Figures 2 and 3.

^ Engines with a circled "F" symbol have been verified for good camshafts. Release the vehicle.

^ Engines with the "G" symbol have been built with certified camshafts. Release the vehicle.

^ Engines built 1/27/00 through 2/2/00 with the "F" symbol without a circle are a suspect and the Julian date on the end of the camshaft must be inspected.

INSPECT THE CAMSHAFT

1. Remove the transmission or transaxle. Refer to the appropriate section in the workshop manual.

NOTE:
The flywheels bolts cannot be reused.

2. Remove the flywheel.

3. Remove the cup plug from the block at the back of the camshaft. Discard the cup plug. See Figure 4.

^ Tap a screwdriver under the outer lip of the cup plug to get it away from the block. (The beveled portion of the screwdriver should be flat against the block to prevent scratching the surface of the block).

^ Grab the lip of the cup plug with a pair of vise-grips and pull from the block.

4. Inspect the Julian date on the end of the camshaft. If the Julian date is 023-00 through 033-00, the camshaft is suspect and the suffix letter following the Julian date must be checked. See Figure 4.

^ All camshafts built from 023-00 through 033-00 with an "A" suffix are good.

^ All camshafts built from 023-00 through 033-00 with a "B1", "X", or "Y" suffix are suspect.

Hold all vehicles with suspect camshafts until further direction from Ford Motor Company.

5. On all vehicles that pass the cam inspection:

a. Make sure all sealer from the prior cup plug is cleaned from the block, then install a new cup plug, (Part No. F1DZ-6266-A).

NOTE:
Use new flywheel bolts (Part No. E1FZ-6379-A).

b. Reinstall the flywheel. Tighten the bolts to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

c. Install the transmission or transaxle. Refer to the appropriate section in the workshop manual.
