Timing Component Alignment Marks: Locations

CAUTION: Timing chain size must be determined before timing the engine, by counting the teeth on the camshaft sprockets. Camshaft sprockets with 36 teeth will have a 9.52 mm (3/8 in) chain. Camshaft sprockets with 42 teeth will have an 8 mm (5/16 in) chain. Failure to identify the correct chain size before assembly will result in severe engine damage.

CAUTION: Failure to verify correct timing drive component positioning will result in severe engine damage.

Engines equipped with 8 mm (5/16 in) timing chains.

- There should be 12 chain links between the front camshaft timing marks.
- There should be 27 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.
- There should be 30 chain links between the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks.

Engines with 9.52 mm (3/8 in) timing chains.

- There should be 10 links between the camshaft timing marks.
- There should be 23 links between the camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks.
- There should be 25 links between the camshaft and the crankshaft timing marks.
