Removal
Special Tools:
1. General Instructions:
- The following instructions apply to the CD4E automatic transaxle with the 2.5L engine.
- The locations of engine mountings and engine roll restrictor are described looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
2. Standard preparatory measures:
- Move the selector lever to "D" position.
- Make a note of the radio keynote.
- Make a note of the preset radio stations.
3. Remove the battery tray.
4. Fix the radiator in position on both sides (left-hand side shown).
5. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL).
6. NOTE: Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod turning
Loosen the suspension strut nuts five turns (right-hand side shown).
7. Loosen the wheel nuts to both front wheels.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the automatic transaxle assembly.

3 Transmission Range Switch (TR switch)
4 Wiring harness retaining clip
9. Remove the water pump pulley cover.
1 Disconnect the engine coolant hose.
2 Remove the bolts.
3 Remove the water pump cover.
10. NOTE: Starter motor to remain in vehicle temporarily.
Remove the starter motor bolts.
11. Install the special tools.
12. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket.
13. Unscrew two nuts from front engine support insulator bracket.
14. NOTE: Ground lead.
Remove the upper bellhousing bolts (MY '99 four bolts).
15. Disconnect the selector cable frown the transaxle.
1 Bracket.
2 Selector lever selector cable.
16. Raise the vehicle.
17. Remove both front wheels.
18. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
- Place suitable pan under the transaxle.
- Restraighten the drain plug.
19. Remove radiator splash shield.
- Remove the bolts and clips.
20. Remove the bolts from the right-hand rear, inner splash shield.
21. Remove the front lower right-hand fender splash shield.
22. NOTE: Rotate bumper cover braces forward.
Remove the bumper cover brace on left and right-hand sides from sub-frame (left-hand side shown).
Vehicles with air conditioning
23. Remove the suction accumulator A/C bracket bolts.
All Vehicles
24. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) connector.
- Separate the cable ties.
25. Disconnect the plug from the Turbine Shaft Speed Sensor (TSS) (shown from below).
- Unclip the harness.
26. NOTE: Separate harness from transaxle.
Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector (shown from below).
27. Disconnect the Output Shaft Speed Sensor (OSS) electrical connector (if equipped).
28. CAUTION: Over bending of the flexible pipe may cause damage resulting in failure.
Remove the flexible pipe and the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
- Remove the gaskets.
29. Remove the flexible pipe and the TWC (continuation).
- Remove the gaskets.
30. Remove the control arm.
31. Raise the automatic transaxle assembly slightly using the High-Lift Transmission Jack.
32. Remove the left-hand engine support insulator center bolt.
33. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
34. Remove the steering gear (two bolts) and tie it up (left-hand side shown).
35. Disconnect the power steering oil hoses from the subframe (one nut and two bolts).
36. Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering car.
37. Remove the transaxle cooler line brackets.
- Reposition the suction accumulator (A/C), if equipped.
38. WARNING: Support the subframe using Rotunda Powertrain Lift. Place wooden block approximately one metre (40 inches) in length secured to lift under sub-frame.
Remove the sub-frame.
39. Remove the right-hand roll restrictor center bolt.
40. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove the upper transaxle cooling tube.
- Close the hole with a suitable stuffing.
41. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove the lower transaxle cooling tube.
- Unclip transaxle cooling tube from hold down.
- Close the hole with a suitable stuffing
42. Position Transmission Jack under the oil pan.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
43. Using the special tools disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.
44. CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
Pull out the left-hand halfshaft and tie it up.
CAUTION: To avoid damage to joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
45. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
- Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanics wire.
46. NOTE: Discard the nuts.
Remove the torque converter rubber and the four torque converter nuts.
- Remove rubber cover to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
- Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining(T nuts.
47. Install the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack and CD4E transaxle adapter.
- Secure with the Retaining straps.
48. Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.
49. Remove the front bellhousing bolts.
50. CAUTION: Torque converter is heavy. Install special tool before lowering transaxle.
Install special tool.
51. Lower the transaxle.
