Valve Spring: Service and Repair

Special Tools:

Removal
1. Remove the left-hand valve cover.
2. Remove the right-hand valve cover.





3. CAUTION: The piston must be at the bottom of its stroke with both valves closed. Any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into the cylinder.

Remove the spark plug.





4. Install the adapter into the spark plug bore and connect a compressed air supply at 102-144 psi.





5. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and remove the roller finger follower.





6. Using the special tool, remove the valve spring assembly.
1 Compress the valve spring and remove the valve spring collets.
2 Remove the valve spring retainer.
3 Remove the valve spring.

Installation





1. Using the special tool, install the valve spring.
1 Install the valve spring.
2 Install the valve spring retainer.
3 Compress the valve spring and install the valve collets.





2. Using the special tool, compress the valve spring and install the roller finger follower.





3. Remove the adapter for the compressed air supply.





4. Install the spark plug.
5. Install the right-hand valve cover.
6. Install the left-hand valve cover.
