Special Tools:

Disassembly
1. Install Pinion and Carrier Bearing Puller.





1 Install the thrust element.
2 Insert the tapered insert
3 Attach the basic tool.





2. Pull the taper roller bearings off the differential (continued).
- Install the half shells of the insert.
- Attach the half shells to the basic tool.





3. Preload the bearing and remove it.
4. Repeat sub-operations to for the other taper roller bearing.





5. Remove the speedometer gear by gently prying it off.
- Speedometer drive gear (2.5 L engine)
- Speedometer trigger wheel (2.0 L engine)





6. Remove the gear.
- Unscrew the bolts.
- Disconnect the gear by tapping lightly on it.

Assembly

1. NOTE: Do not oil taper roller bearings which are to be used again. New taper roller bearings can be installed without any treatment.

Carefully clean and check all parts and lubricate them with automatic transmission fluid ESD-M2C 186-A.





2. Install the gear to the differential.
- Tighten the bolts, working diagonally.

3. NOTE: The speedometer-worm gear (2.5 L engine)-trigger wheel (2.0 L engine) must engage in the housing recess.

Install the bearing.





1 Install the speedometer worm gear.
2 Install the bearing using the special tools.
