Tie Rod: Service and Repair
Removal1. Remove the steering gear.
2. NOTE: Make a note of the number of turns required to remove the tie-rod end.
Remove the tie-rod end and locknut.
1. Remove the tie-rod end.
2. Remove the tie-rod end locknut.
3. Remove the boot retaining clamps.
4. Remove the boot.
1. Disconnect the steering gear breather pipe.
2. Slide the boot off the tie-rod.
5. CAUTION: Clamp the steering rack to avoid extensive torque forces when removing the tie-rod.
Remove the tie-rod.
6. NOTE: SVT vehicles are equipped with travel restrictors, to allow for larger wheel and tire combinations without interference problems.
On SVT vehicles remove the tie-rod.
1. Remove the tie-rod.
2. Remove the travel restrictors.
Installation
1. NOTE: Make sure the tie-rod end is secured by the same number of turns used to remove it. Install the boot using new retaining clamps.
NOTE: On SVT equipped vehicles make sure the travel restrictors are installed.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
