Power Steering Line/Hose: Service and Repair
Removal1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Loosen the front road wheel retaining nuts.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Remove the front road wheels.
5. Remove the radiator splash shield.
6. Disconnect the fluid cooler lines.
^ Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
7. Remove the lower splash shield.
8. Remove the accessory drive belt.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Remove the accessory drive belt upper guard.
11. Detach the high-pressure tube support bracket.
12. Disconnect the power steering pump low-pressure hose.
^ Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
13. Detach the coolant hose retaining bracket.
14. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley.
15. Remove the power steering pressure switch.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
2. Remove the switch.
16. Disconnect the power steering pump high-pressure tube union.
17. Disconnect the hoses from the power steering fluid reservoir.
^ Drain the fluid into a suitable container.
18. Support the radiator (both sides).
19. Center the steering wheel and lock in position.
20. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling.
^ Remove the bolt and rotate the clamp plate.
21. CAUTION: When removing the floor seal do not damage the sealing clips.
Remove the floor seal.
1. Release the retaining clips.
2. Disconnect the upper retainer.
22. Raise and support the vehicle.
23. Detach the radiator support brackets (both sides).
24. Detach the bumper support brackets (both sides).
25. Detach the air conditioning condenser (if equipped).
26. Detach the fluid cooler lines retaining bracket.
27. Disconnect the three way catalytic converter from the center muffler.
28. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector.
1. Disconnect the electrical connector.
2. Unclip the wiring.
29. Remove the front support insulator.
30. Detach the rear support insulator.
31. Support the subframe assembly.
32. Remove the subframe retaining bolts.
33. Lower the subframe to gain access to the steering gear tubes.
34. Remove the flexible coupling.
1. Remove the pinch bolt.
2. Remove the coupling.
35. Disconnect the high-pressure tube support bracket.
36. Disconnect the low-pressure tube support bracket.
37. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum tube.
38. CAUTION: When the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports must be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.
Disconnect the power steering tube to steering gear unions.
1. Disconnect the high-pressure tube union and drain the fluid into a suitable container.
2. Disconnect the return tube union.
Installation
1. If new tubes are to be installed, push the tubes into the new unions.
2. Using the special tool, install new O-ring seals.
1. Push the new O-ring seal onto the tool.
2. Locate the tool on the union and push on the O-ring seal.
3. Install the power steering tube unions to the steering gear.
4. Install the brake booster vacuum tube.
5. Install the return pressure tube support bracket.
6. Install the high-pressure tube support bracket.
7. WARNING: Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
Install the flexible coupling.
8. Install the special tool.
1. Push the alignment pins through the subframe aligning holes.
2. Engage the locking pins.
3. Tighten the alignment pin sleeves.
9. Using the special tool, align the subframe.
10. Install the subframe retaining bolts.
11. Remove the special tool.
1. Loosen the alignment pin sleeves.
2. Disengage the locking pins.
3. Remove the alignment pins from the subframe aligning holes.
12. Using the special tool, align the powertrain.
1. Install the alignment tool.
2. Install the center bolt.
13. Install the rear support insulator.
14. Remove the special tool.
1. Remove the center bolt.
2. Remove the alignment tool.
15. Install the front support insulator.
16. Connect the heated oxygen sensor electrical connector.
1. Connect the electrical connector.
2. Secure the wiring.
17. Install the three way catalytic converter to the center muffler.
18. Attach the air conditioning condenser (if equipped).
19. Attach the fluid cooler lines retaining bracket.
20. Attach the bumper support brackets.
21. Attach the radiator support brackets.
22. CAUTION: Before lowering the vehicle make sure that the steering is in the straight ahead position.
Lower the vehicle.
23. Install the floor seal.
24. WARNING: Install a new clamp bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
Install the steering column shaft to the flexible coupling.
25. Connect the hoses to the power steering fluid reservoir.
26. Install the power steering pump high-pressure line union.
27. Install the power steering pressure switch.
^ Connect the electrical connector.
28. NOTE: Make sure the pulley is flush with the end of the power steering pump shaft.
Using the special tool, install the power steering pump pulley.
29. Install the coolant hose retaining bracket.
30. Connect the power steering pump low-pressure hose.
31. Install the high-pressure tube support bracket.
32. Install the accessory drive belt upper guard.
33. Install the accessory drive belt.
34. Install the lower splash shield.
35. Install the fluid copier lines.
36. Install the radiator splash shield.
37. Install the front road wheels.
38. Connect the battery ground cable.
39. Bleed the power steering system.
