General Module: Description and Operation
CENTRAL TIMER MODULE (CTM)Installation of the Central Timer Module:
Operation Of The CTM
^ Windshield wipers
^ Heated rear window
^ Entry illumination
^ Lights-on warning chime unit
^ Safety belt warning
Windshield Wipers
Vehicles with fixed intervall: If the windshield wiper switch is put into the interval position when the ignition is switched on, the windshield wiper relay is actuated to trigger the windshield wiper motor at set intervals. Vehicles with variable intermittent wipe: The wiper is actuated again after the set time. This sequence repeats itself until the wiper delay switch is switched out of the interval position or the windshield wiper switch is switched off. Switching the wiper process off and on again results in starting a new wiper process with the set interval. If the windscreen washer switch is pressed, continuous wiping takes place until the windscreen washer switch is released, followed by two further wipes. To fix the final position of the windshield wiper, the contact in the windshield wiper motor sends a signal to the CTM. The wiper delay switch is a potentiometer with the value 47 kOhm, the slider of which is connected to the CTM. The smallest interval between two wipes which can be set with this potentiometer is about 4 sec.; the largest is about 21 sec.
Heated Rear Window
If the heated rear window switch is actuated when the ignition is switched on, the heated rear window relay is actuated. The heated rear window is then switched on, and automatically switched off again after about 10 min.
Entry Illumination
When the ignition is on the entry illumination is switched on or off immediately. The entry illumination relay is switched on if one or more of the conditions are fulfilled: driver door open, passenger door open.
When the ignition is off the entry illumination is activated immediately when these conditions occur: driver door open, passenger door open or the infra-red "unlock" signal is sent by remote control.
The entry illumination is automatically switched off again after about 12 seconds, if these conditions are fulfilled: driver's door closed, passenger's door closed and infra-red signal "unlock" no longer sent, even if one of the door-handle switches is still being held. If the ignition is switched on during these 12 seconds, the entry illumination goes out immediately when the conditions above are fulfilled.
Lights-on Warning Chime Unit
When the ignition is switched off, and the dipped or main beam is switched on, and the driver's door is opened, the warning chime which is integrated in the CTM sounds. The warning chime goes off if the lights are switched off or the driver's door is closed.
Seat Belt Warning
If the ignition is switched on, and the driver seat belt is not in the buckle, the warning chime sounds for 4 to 8 seconds and the seat belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster illuminates. If the seat belt is put into the seat belt buckle within about 85 seconds, the warning lamp goes out. If this occurs while the warning chime is still on, this also goes off. If the seat belt buckle is not actuated during these 85 seconds, the warning lamp remains on during these 85 seconds.
Transmission Selector Lever Not In The Park Position
If the ignition is switched off or the ignition key is still in the lock, and the transmission selector lever is not in the park position, and the driver's door is open, the warning chime sounds. The CTM receives the signal that the transmission selector lever is not in the park position from the instrument cluster module.
MESSAGE CENTER MODULE
Location Of The Instrument Cluster Module:
Operation of the Instrument Cluster Module
^ Activation of the overdrive control light
^ Triggering the low coolant level indicator lamp
^ Activation of the selector lever locking device solenoid
^ Triggering the park position warning chime
Overdrive Control Light
The overdrive indicator lamp is triggered if the instrument cluster module receives a signal from the powertrain control module. This is the case when the driver locks into fourth gear by activating the overdrive switch. The indicator lamp is dimmed if the lamp switch is switched on.
Low Coolant Level Indicator Lamp
The low coolant level indicator lamp illuminates for 5 seconds after the ignition is switched on, to test the lamp. This test is always carried out, irrespective of the coolant level. If the coolant level is too low, the indicator lamp remains on. To prevent the lamp from flashing during diming, the indicator lamp is triggered with a time delay if low coolant level is established. The low coolant level switch must be open for a continuous period of 60 seconds before the indicator lamp illuminates. Similarly the switch must be closed for a continuous period of 60 seconds before the indicator lamp is extinguished.
Selector Lever Locking Device Solenoid
The selector lever locking device solenoid is unlocked when the ignition is switched on if a signal is received from the brake pedal position switch. At the same time, the selector lever locking device switch must be pressed. A drive position can only be selected when the selector lever locking device solenoid is unlocked.
Park Position Warning Chime
The instrument cluster module outputs a signal to the CTM if the selector lever locking device switch reports that the selector lever is not in park position If the key is in ignition or the instrument cluster module outputs this signal, when the driver door is open, the warning chime in the CTM sounds until the key is removed and the selector lever is put into park position.
