Removal
1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.







2. Center the steering wheel and lock in position.







3. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling.
- Remove the bolt and rotate the clamp plate to disengage.
- Disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling.







4. CAUTION: When removing the floor seal do not damage the sealing clips.

Remove the floor seal from the bulkhead.
1 Release the retaining clips.
2 Disconnect the upper retainer.







5. Support the radiator on both sides.
6. Slacken the front road wheel retaining nuts.
7. Raise and support the vehicle.
8. Remove the front road wheels.







9. Remove the radiator splash shield.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine







10. Remove the wheel arch splash shields.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







11. Remove the wheel arch splash shield.

All Vehicles







12. Detach the radiator support brackets.







13. Detach the bumper support brackets.







14. Detach the air conditioning condenser (if fitted).







15. Drain the power steering fluid.
- Disconnect the fluid cooler hoses and allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.







16. Detach the heated oxygen sensor electrical wiring from the subframe.
17. Remove the three way catalytic convertor.







18. Remove the front roll restrictor.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine
19. Remove the exhaust Y pipe.







20. Remove the rear roll restrictor.







21. Remove the rear roll restrictor to transmission mounting bracket.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







22. Detach the rear roll restrictor.







23. Remove the roll restrictor

All Vehicles







24. CAUTION: Leave the castellated nuts in position to protect the ball joint studs.

Loosen the tie rod end castellated nuts.
1 Remove the cotter pins and discard.
2 Loosen the castellated nuts.







25. CAUTION: Protect the ball joint seals to prevent damage.

Detach the tie rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
1 Install the tie rod end remover.
2 Remove the tie rod ends.







26. Detach the stabilizer bar connecting links.







27. Detach the lower arms from the wheel knuckles.
28. Support the subframe assembly.







29. Remove the subframe retaining bolts.







30. Lower the subframe to gain access to the steering gear tubes.







31. Remove the flexible coupling.
1 Remove the pinch bolt.
2 Remove the flexible coupling.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine







32. Detach the low - pressure tube support bracket.







33. Detach the high - pressure tube support bracket.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







34. Detach the low - pressure tube support bracket.







35. Detach the high - pressure tube support bracket.

All Vehicles







36. CAUTION: Whenever the steering gear unions are disconnected the steering gear valve body ports must be plugged to prevent dirt ingress.

Detach the steering gear unions.
1 Disconnect the high - pressure tube union and drain the fluid into a suitable container.
2 Disconnect the low - pressure tube union.

37. Remove the subframe.

Installation
1. Support the subframe in position.







2. Renew the union sealing rings.
1 Push the new sealing ring onto the tool.
2 Locate the tool on the union and push on the new sealing ring.







3. Install the steering gear unions.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







4. Install the high pressure tube support bracket.







5. Install the low pressure tube support bracket.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine







6. Install the high pressure tube support bracket.







7 Install the low - pressure tube support bracket.

All Vehicles







8. Install the flexible coupling.







9. Install the subframe alignment pins (one each side).
1 Install the alignment pins in the subframe alignment holes.
2 Install the locking pins.
3 Tighten the alignment pin sleeves.







10. Position the subframe engaging the alignment pins into the alignment holes.







11. NOTE: Install the blue colored bolts to the front.

Install the subframe mounting bolts.







12. Install the lower arms to wheel knuckles.







13. Install the stabilizer bar connecting links.







14. NOTE: Install new cotter pins.

Install the tie rod ends to the wheel knuckles.







15. Install the powertrain alignment tool.
1 Install the alignment tool.
2 Install the center bolt.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







16. Install the rear roll restrictor.







17. Install the rear roll restrictor center bolt.
18. Install the three - way catalytic convertor.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine







19. Install the rear roll restrictor to transmission mounting bracket.







20. Install the rear roll restrictor.
21. Install the exhaust Y pipe.
22. Install the three way catalytic convertor.

All Vehicles
23. Remove the powertrain alignment tool.







24. Install the front roll restrictor.







25. Install the heated oxygen sensor electrical wiring to the subframe.







26. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hoses.







27. Install the air conditioning condenser (if fitted).







28. Install the bumper support brackets.







29. Install the radiator support brackets.

Vehicles with 2.0L engine







30. Install the wheel arch splash shield.

Vehicles with 2.5L engine







31. Install the wheel arch splash shields.

All Vehicles







32. Install the radiator splash shield.







33. Install the front road wheels.
34. Lower the vehicle.







35. Remove the radiator supports on both sides.







36. CAUTION: Take care not to damage the retaining clips.

Install the floor seal to the bulkhead.
1 Locate the upper retainer.
2 Engage the retaining clip (nipples indicated show the position of the hidden clips.







37. Install the steering column shaft to the flexible coupling with a new bolt.

CAUTION: Use a new bolt for safety reason.

38. Bleed the power steering system.
39. Connect the battery ground cable.
