Attachment III - Technical Information

AFFECTED VEHICLES:
CERTAIN 2001 MERCURY COUGAR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2.0L ZETEC ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Proceed to the appropriate procedure depending on your choice of diagnostic tools. If reprogramming is necessary, the updated PCM ID is XS8A-SC. If reprogramming is not required, an Authorized Modification Label must still be installed on the vehicle.

^ If using Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS), use WDS CD-ROM B10 release (or subsequent release if applicable) available via Fordstar, or for Non-Fordstar dealers available at: http://www.fordtechservice.com/vdirs/wds

^ If using Service Bay Technical System (SBTS) and the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester with Rotunda flash cable (007-00531) and Rotunda flash card (007-00532), use October release CD-ROM (or subsequent release, if applicable).

RETRIEVING PCM INFORMATION AND REPROGRAMMING USING WORLDWIDE DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (WDS)

1. Connect the WDS to the vehicle DLC.

2. Select 16 PIN, then select ALL EXCEPT THOSE BELOW.

3. Verify the transmission selector is in either PARK or NEUTRAL, set the parking brake and turn the ignition ON.

4. Select the appropriate model year.

5. Answer YES or NO when asked if the vehicle is equipped with ABS brakes.

6. Verify vehicle specifications.

7. Go to LOG VIEWER.

8. Note the PCM ID information.

9. If the PCM requires reprogramming to the XS8A-SC level, go to Step 11 for additional steps. If reprogramming is not required, proceed to Preparing Authorized Modification Label.

10. To reprogram the PCM, go to the TOOL BOX.

11. If reprogramming is not required, proceed to Preparing Authorized Modification Label.

12. To reprogram the PCM, go to the TOOL BOX.

13. Select PCM.

14. Answer YES when asked to reprogram.

15. Proceed to Preparing Authorized Modification Label.

RETRIEVING PCM INFORMATION AND REPROGRAMMING USING RETRIEVING PCM INFORMATION AND REPROGRAMMING USING

1. Connect the NGS to the vehicle with the applicable diagnostic card inserted.

2. Turn the key ON and select NEW VEHICLE from the NGS menu. Hit TRIGGER to continue.

3. Pick the Model Year then hit TRIGGER.

4. Select the vehicle/engine and hit TRIGGER.

5. Next, select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK from the menu and hit TRIGGER.

6. Select PCM from the menu and hit TRIGGER.

7. Select MODULE ID and hit TRIGGER.

8. Note the PCM ID.

9. If the PCM requires reprogramming to the XS8A-SC level, go to Step 10 for additional steps. If reprogramming is not required, proceed to Preparing Authorized Modification Label.

10. To begin the reprogramming process, first download the applicable calibration file onto a Rotunda Flash Card (007-00532) and insert into the NGS.

11. Connect Rotunda Flash Cable (007-00531) to the NGS and to the vehicle.

12. Select PCM RECALIBRATION from the menu and hit TRIGGER.

13. Enter the last 8 characters of the VIN and hit ENTER.

14. Select the applicable calibration file and hit TRIGGER.

15. Cycle the key OFF then ON and hit TRIGGER.

16. Turn the key OFF then hit TRIGGER.

17. Next, turn the key ON being sure not to crank the engine. The NGS will now verify the current calibration. Hit TRIGGER to continue. The NGS will then reprogram the PCM.This may take several minutes.

18. The NGS will complete the reprogramming by running a KOEO Self Test.

19. Disconnect the flash cable. Proceed to Preparing Authorized Modification Label.

PREPARING AUTHORIZED MODIFICATION LABEL





1. Obtain and prepare the Authorized Modification Label. Write the modification completed, your P&A code, the date of repair, the program type and program number as shown. See Figure 1.

2. Apply the label to a clean area of the upper radiator support.
