Installation
Note: The locations of engine mountings and engine support insulators are given looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
Note: Install new snap rings, cotter pins and self locking nuts.
1. Note: The torque converter hub must fully engage with the oil pump drive gear.
Check the installation depth of the torque converter.
1. Lay a Straight edge on the transaxle flange.
2. Check the depth between transaxle flange and the torque converter centering spigot for the correct clearance.
2. Apply a thin layer of High-temperature grease to the centering spigot bore on the torque converter.
3. Caution: The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the entire installation procedure. Check that the adapter plate is in the correct position. Position the transaxle in installation position next to the engine and guide the torque converter stud into the drive plate.
4. Screw in all the flange bolts.
5. Tighten the flange bolts on the left-hand side.
6. Tighten the upper flange bolts.
^ Install the starter motor cable bracket.
7. Using the special tools and a suitable Floor Crane move the engine/transaxle assembly and secure it with Securing straps on powertrain lift.
8. Remove the special tools.
9. Tighten the flange bolts on the right-hand side.
10. Connect the torque converter to the engine drive plate (four nuts) and install the rubber cover.
11. Install the starter motor.
^ Install the ground cable.
12. Install the starter motor electrical connections.
13. Move the engine and transaxle assembly on Powertrain Lift underneath the vehicle into installation position and carefully lower the vehicle.
14. Note: Do not tighten the nuts.
Install the rear engine mounting bracket nuts.
15. Note: Do not tighten the nuts and bolts.
Install the front engine mounting bracket nuts.
16. Install the special tools.
17. Remove the retaining straps from the engine and the transaxle. Remove the Powertrain Lift.
18. Connect and secure the fuel lines.
^ Push on the retaining clips.
19. Connect the battery cables and electrical connectors and secure the wiring harness with cable ties.
20. Connect the vacuum hoses to the intake manifold.
21. Connect the main wiring harness to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
1. Connect the main wiring harness electrical connector.
2. Connect the two ground cables.
3. Install the wiring bracket.
4. Install the power steering reservoir.
22. Raise and support the vehicle.
23. Connect the heater coolant hose.
24. Install the power steering pump bolts.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
25. Install the compressor bolts.
26. Connect the compressor electrical connector.
All Vehicles
27. Lower the vehicle.
28. Screw in the upper bolts on the power steering pump, attach the wiring clamp to the fender apron panel and install the coolant hose.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
29. Install the tube/hose (A/C) bracket and the power steering line.
All Vehicles
30. Raise and support the vehicle.
31. Connect the coolant hose to the heater coolant tube and install the bracket.
Caution: To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
32. Install a new snap ring.
33. Note: Do not damage the oil seal. Check that the snap ring engages correctly.
Install the left-hand halfshaft.
34. Note: Do not damage the oil seal.
Install the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft.
35. Position the drive belt in place and tension it.
^ Turn the drive belt tensioner clockwise to relieve belt tension.
36. Connect the to the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor.
^ Clip the wiring in place.
37. Note: Remove the plug prior to installation of the tube.
Connect the fluid tube.
38. Note: Remove the plug prior to installation of the tube.
Connect the fluid cooler tube to the transaxle.
39. Note: The gauge is marked with an arrow and "Front".
Install the special tool.
40. Insert the rubber guides of the lower radiator supports into the subframe.
41. Note: Do not tighten the bolts.
Note: Align the steering gear and the fluid line bracket.
Move the subframe into installation position using a Powertrain Lift and attach it at the front.
^ Insert the radiator into the subframe.
42. Using the special tool, attach the steering gear (two bolts; left-hand side shown).
43. Note: Install the power steering line bracket and the coolant line bracket.
Install the heat shield for the steering gear.
45. Note: The subframe must not move when tightening the bolts.
Using the special tool, align the subframe and tighten the bolts.
1. Insert the special tools.
2. Insert the suspension arm into the spindle.
3. Tighten the bolts working diagonally.
46. Align the engine and transaxle assembly.
^ Screw the center bolt into the special tool and tighten it.
47. Install the right-hand engine support insulator.
1. Install the center through bolt.
2. Install the bolts.
