Differential

Special Tools:











Disassembly and Assembly
1. Inspect the differential.
- Inspect for damaged or worn gears.
- Inspect for cracked or damaged gear case.





2. Use Dial Indicator/Magnetic Base to measure the backlash of the side gears and pinions. If backlash is not within specification, replace the differential as an assembly.
1. Install the LH and RH halfshafts.
2. Support the halfshafts on V-blocks.
3. Measure the backlash of the side gears and pinions.





3. Remove the differential pinion shaft lock pin.





4. Remove the differential pinion shaft.





5. Remove the differential pinion gears and differential pinion thrust washers.





6. Remove the differential side gears and differential side gear thrust washers.





7. Use (A) Push-Puller Set, (B) Step Plate Adapter Set, (C) Bearing Pulling Attachment and (D) Push-Puller Legs to remove the (E) bearing (speedometer drive gear side).
8. Remove the speedometer drive gear.





9. Use (A) Puller-Differential Side Bearing and (B) Step Plate Adapter to remove the (C) bearing.

Assembly

Note: Whenever a bearing has been removed, a new bearing must be installed.





1. Use a (A) press and (B) Differential Bearing Cone Replacer to install the (C) speedometer drive gear and the (D) bearing.





2. Install the differential bearing.
1. Align the Differential Bearing Cone Replacer.
2. Position the arbor press.
3. Press on the differential bearing.





3. Install the differential side gear thrust washers and differential side gears.





4. Install the differential pinion thrust washers and differential pinion gears.





5. Install the differential pinion shaft.





6. Install and crimp the pinion shaft lock pin.
