Sun Gears and One-Way Clutch

Disassembly

Note: Prior to disassembly, check one-way clutch operation. While holding the one-way clutch outer race, verify that the inner race rotates smoothly when turned counterclockwise and locks when turned clockwise. If not as specified, replace the one-way clutch.





1. Remove the planet gear thrust bearing from the 2 - 4 band drum and small sun gear.





2. Remove the primary sun gear snap ring.





3. Remove the one-way clutch inner race.





4. Remove the one-way clutch. outer race.
- The one-way clutch outer race, the one-way clutch, and the one-way overrunning clutch bearing are removed as an assembly.





5. Separate the (A) one-way clutch from the (B) one-way clutch outer race and remove the (C) one-way overrunning clutch bearing.





6. Remove the planet gear thrust bearing.





7. Remove the primary sun gear snap ring.





8. Remove the primary sun gear.





9. Remove the planet gear thrust bearing race.

Assembly
1. Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages. Perform the following before assembly:
- Inspect the inner and outer races for scoring, grooves, or wear.
- Inspect thrust bearings for damage or wear.
- Inspect the primary sun gear and 2 - 4 band drum and small sun gear for damage or wear.





2. Measure the primary sun gear inner diameter.
- If not within the specification, replace the primary sun gear.





3. Measure the 2 - 4 band drum and small sun gear inner diameter.
- If not within the specification, replace the 2 - 4 band drum and small sun gear.





4. Install the primary sun gears into the 2 - 4 band drum and small sun gear.





5. Install a new primary sun gear snap ring.





6. Apply petroleum jelly to the planet gear thrust bearing and install the planet gear thrust bearing into the rear sun gear and drum.
- The planet gear thrust bearing outer diameter is 86.1 mm (3.39 inch).





7. Verify that the spring cage of the one-way clutch faces toward the outer race.





8. Insert the (A) one-way clutch into the (C) one-way clutch outer race. Apply petroleum jelly to the (B) one-way overrunning clutch bearing and secure it to the one-way clutch outer race.
- One-way overrunning clutch bearing outer diameter is 58.0 mm (2.283 inch).





9. Install the one-way clutch inner race into the one-way clutch outer race by turning the inner race counterclockwise. Hold the one-way clutch outer race and verify that the inner race turns only counterclockwise.





10. Note: Align the splines of the one-way clutch outer race and primary sun gear .

Install the forward clutch cylinder and one-way clutch outer race assembly into the rear sun gear and drum.





11. Install a new primary sun gear snap ring.





12. Verify that when the primary sun gear is held, the one-way clutch outer race turns smoothly and only clockwise.





13. Apply petroleum jelly to the planet gear thrust bearing race and secure it to the rear sun gear and drum.





14. Apply petroleum jelly to the planet gear thrust bearing and secure it to the rear sun gear and drum.
- Planet gear thrust bearing outer diameter is 86.1 mm (3.39 inch).
