Engine Off

Static checks (engine off) are to be made on the engine prior to the dynamic analysis.

Valve Cover Removed
Check for damaged and/or severely worn parts and correct assembly. Make sure correct parts are used with the static valve train analysis.

Rocker Arm (SPI Engine)
^ Check for loose mounting bolts, studs and nuts.
^ Check for plugged oil feed in the rocker arm or cylinder head.

Valve Tappets
Inspect the valve tappets for:
^ excessive/worn valve tappet shim (Zetec engine).
^ excessive tappet gap.
^ sticking tappet plunger (2.0L SPI).
^ sticking tappet bucket (2.0L Zetec).
Replace valve tappets as necessary.

Camshaft - Overhead Camshaft Engines
Inspect the camshaft for: scoring, scratches and excess wear on the camshaft lobes.
Replace the camshaft if necessary.

Valve Springs
^ Check for broken or damaged valve springs.
^ Check valve spring strength.
Replace as necessary.

Valve Spring Retainer and Retainer Keys
Check for proper seating of valve spring retainer keys on the valve stem and in the valve spring retainer.

Valves and Cylinder Head
^ Check for plugged oil drain back holes.
^ Check for worn or damaged valve tips.
^ Check for missing or damaged valve stem seals.
^ Check for excessive valve tappet gap.
^ Check installed valve spring length.
^ Check for worn valve tappet shim (Zetec engine).
Replace components as necessary.
