Transaxle
WARNING: USE EYE PROTECTION WHEN USING COMPRESSED AIR TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY.Clean the parts not cleaned during disassembly or sub-assembly (except friction plates or bands) with suitable solvent and use moisture-free air or lint-free shop towels to dry off all parts and clean out fluid passages.
The composition clutch plates, control valve body-to-screen gasket, bands and synthetic seals should not be cleaned in a vapor degreaser or with any type of detergent solution. To clean these parts, wipe them off with a lint-free shop towel. New clutch plates or bands should be soaked in the specified transmission fluid for 15 minutes before being assembled.
Inspect:
^ lubrication tubes for damage.
^ manual linkage parts for damage or wear.
^ transaxle case for:
- bushing wear
- machined surfaces for damage or wear.
- sealing surface damage.
- hydraulic passage blockage.
Make sure necessary replacement parts will be available for reassembly.
Make sure the complete assortment of selective fit parts are available for adjustments during assembly:
^ drive sprocket thrust washers
^ driven sprocket thrust bearing shims
^ differential case thrust bearing shims
^ low/reverse clutch pressure plates
^ reverse clutch beveled retaining rings
During reassembly, use petroleum jelly to hold parts in place (do not use grease).
When tightening fasteners, use an accurate torque wrench.
Lightly coat bolt and nut threads with automatic transmission fluid for installation torque specifications.
Main Control Valve Body
1. Thoroughly clean all parts, except check balls, in clean solvent and blow dry with moisture-free compressed air.
2. Inspect all valve and plug bores for scores. Check all fluid passages for obstructions. Inspect all mating surfaces for burrs find scores. Do not stone or polish any valves or bores. If valve(s) do not move freely, the main control valve body must be replaced as an assembly.
3. Inspect all springs for distortion. Check all valves and plugs for free movement in their respective bores. Valves and plugs, when dry, must fall from their own weight from their respective bores.
4. Roll manual valve on a flat surface to check for out-of-round condition.
Servo
1. Inspect servo body for cracks and piston bore for scores.
2. Check fluid passages for obstructions.
3. Inspect band and struts for distortion. Inspect band ends for cracks.
4. Inspect servo spring for distortion.
5. Inspect band lining for excessive wear and bonding to metal band.
6. Replace damaged seals.
