Variable Assist Power Steering (VAPS)

The VAPS system consists of the following components:
- power rack and pinion steering gear
- rotary valve assembly (part of power steering short rack)
- pressure and return hoses
- high efficiency, power steering pump that varies flow with engine RPM
- power steering pump reservoir
- power steering fluid cooler





The VAPS system uses a power steering pump that reduces flow as engine RPM is increased.
- During parking and low speed operation, the flow from the power steering pump is at maximum flow.
- As vehicle speed increases, the power steering pump reduces the flow to the steering gear decreasing the level of assist.
