FRONT SEAT BELT ANCHOR INSPECTION/REPLACEMENTAFFECTED VEHICLES:
1998-1999 TAURUS WITH MANUAL FRONT SEATS
OVERVIEW
The following instructions cover:
^ Locating and identifying seat track date codes to find out it a new seat belt mount sub-assembly needs to be installed.
^ Installation of the seat belt mount sub-assembly.
INSPECTION OF DATE CODES
1. Position the seat to the fully forward position.
2. Remove the rear cover from the inboard seat track.
3. Remove the retaining nut from the inboard rear seat track. See Figure 1. (Stud may be removed with nut).
NOTE:
On "flip console" models it may be necessary to remove the center seat belt anchor in order to read the date code stamp.
4. Inspect date code stamp located on seat track rail. See Figure 2.
a) Passenger Side Seat Inspection:
- Replace the seat belt buckle assembly if:
^ date code stamp is not readable
^ or the date code is 28078A, 29078A or 04088A
- No service action is needed if the date code stamp is different than those listed above. Reinstall the center seat belt anchor (if equipped), inboard seat track retainer nut and cover. Tighten retainer nut to 68-92 Nm (50-68 lb-ft).
b) Drivers Side Seat Inspection:
- Replace the seat belt buckle assembly if:
^ date code stamp is not readable
^ or the date code is 24078A, 29078A, 30078A or 05088A
- No service action is needed if the date code stamp is different than those listed above. Reinstall the center seat belt anchor (if equipped), inboard seat track retainer nut and cover. Tighten retainer nut to 68-92 Nm (50-68 lb-ft).
SERVICE PROCEDURE (PASSENGER/DRIVER SEAT)
1. Remove the rear cover from the outboard seat track.
2. Remove the rear retaining nut from the outboard seat track. (Stud must not be removed with nut).
3. Reposition the seat to the fully rearward position.
4. Remove covers from both the front seat tracks.
5. Remove front retaining bolts from seat tracks.
6. From under seat, disconnect electrical connector.
7. Remove the seat from the vehicle.
8. Remove the outer pivot cover from the seat belt buckle assembly.See Figure 3.
9. Remove the seat belt buckle retaining nut, then remove buckle from stud assembly. See Figure 4.
10. Remove and discard retaining nuts from seat belt mount sub-assembly, then remove seat belt mount sub-assembly. See Figure 5.
11. Install new seat belt mount sub-assembly and retaining nuts. Tighten retaining nuts to 25-35 Nm (18-26 lb-ft).
12. Install seat belt buckle on stud assembly. Tighten retaining nuts to 30-43 Nm (22-32 lb-ft).
13. Install outer pivot cover to seat belt buckle assembly.
14. Install seat in vehicle.
15. Connect electrical connector.
16. Install front retaining bolts on both seat tracks. Tighten to 20-25 Nm (15-18 lb-ft).
17. Install covers over the seat track retaining nuts.
18. Reposition seat to fully forward position.
19. Install rear retaining nuts on outboard seat tracks. Tighten to 20-25 Nm (15-18 lb-ft).
20. Install rear retaining nut on inboard seat track. On "Flip Console" models, position center seat belt buckle in place before installing retaining nut. Tighten to 68-92 Nm (50-68 lb-ft).
21. Install covers over the seat track retaining nuts. 22.
22. Check operation of front seats.
