Shift Point Road Tests

NOTE: Always drive the vehicle in a safe manner according to driving conditions and obey all traffic laws.

Shift Point Road Test
This test verifies that the shift control system is operating properly. Perform the test as follows:
1. Bring engine and transaxle up to normal operating temperature.
2. Operate vehicle with gearshift lever in OD range.
3. Apply minimum throttle and observe speeds at which upshift occurs and torque converter engages.

4. NOTE: Shift speed ranges are approximate for all applications.

Stop vehicle and move transaxle range selector lever to D range. Repeat Step 3. Transaxle will make all upshifts except 3-4 and torque converter clutch apply should occur above 33 km/h (21 mph).

AX4S Transaxle-Approximate Shift Speeds:

NOTE: Speeds may differ at different altitudes.

5. Press accelerator pedal to floor, Wide-Open Throttle (WOT). Transaxle should shift from third to second, or third to first, depending on vehicle speed, and torque converter clutch should release.
6. With vehicle speed above 48 km/h (30 mph), move transaxle range selector lever from D range to 1 range (LOW) and remove foot from accelerator pedal. Transaxle should immediately downshift to second gear. When vehicle speed drops below 29 km/h (18 mph), transaxle should downshift into first gear.
7. If transaxle fails to upshift/downshift or torque converter clutch does not apply and release, refer to Diagnosis by Symptom Index for possible causes.
