Catalytic Converter: Service and Repair

Removal

1. CAUTION: When servicing exhaust system or removing exhaust components, disconnect all heated oxygen sensors at the wiring connectors to prevent damage to the heated oxygen sensors and wiring harness.

Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor connector at the transmission fill tube.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Disconnect three heated oxygen sensor connectors and locators from the front and rear of the subframe. Remove two left and two right retaining nuts at the exhaust manifolds.
4. Remove the bolts, nuts, and gasket from the converter outlet-to-flex tube flange. Loosen one nut at the slotted bracket for the exhaust hanger, at the front of the transaxle. Remove the exhaust bracket bolt and the converter assembly.
5. Mark each heated oxygen sensor to and in installation. Remove each H02S from the converter.

Installation
1. Install each heated oxygen sensor in the correct location.
2. Position the catalytic converter assembly in place and loosely install one exhaust bracket bolt to support the exhaust.
3. Install two right and two left retaining nuts to the exhaust manifolds. Tighten the bolt at the exhaust support to the transaxle. Tighten the nuts and bolts to 34-46 Nm (25-33 ft. lbs.)
4. Using a new gasket, position the converter outlet to the flex tube. Install the bolts and nuts. Tighten the retainers to 34-46 Nm (25-33 ft. lbs.). Securely tighten the nut at the exhaust slotted bracket to the front of the transaxle.
5. Connect the three H02S connectors and locators at the front and rear of the subframe.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Connect the heated oxygen sensors connector at the transmission fill tube.
