Engine Off
Valve Cover RemovedWhen inspecting the cylinder heads with the valve covers removed, check the following:
- cylinder head gaskets for proper installation
- for plugged oil drain back holes
- valve lash
Check for damaged and/or severely worn parts and correct assembly. Make sure correct parts are used by performing the static engine analysis.
Rocker Arm Assembly (3.0L Engines Only)
- Check for loose mounting bolt (3.0L (2V) only).
- Check for plugged oil feed in the rocker arm or cylinder head.
Camshaft -Overhead Camshaft Engines
Check for broken or damaged parts.
Push Rods (3.0L 2V only)
Check for bent push rods and restricted oil passage.
Valve Springs
Check for broken or damaged parts.
Valve Spring Retainer and Valve Spring Retainer Keys
Check for proper seating of valve spring retainer keys on valve stem.
Positive Rotator and Valve Spring Retainer Keys
Check for proper seating in the positive rotator and on valve stem.
Valves and Cylinder Head
- Check cylinder head gaskets for proper installation.
- Check for plugged oil drain back holes.
- Check valve lash.
- Check for worn or damaged valve tips.
- Check for missing or damaged guide-mounted valve stem seals.
- Check collapsed valve tappet gap (hydraulic valve tappet applications).
- Check installed valve spring height.
- Check for missing or worn lower valve spring retainers (if equipped). Static checks (engine off) are to be made on the engine prior to the following dynamic procedure.
