Engine Block Heater

Removal

CAUTION: Do not mix Standard (green) Coolant with Extended Life Coolant (orange). If mixing occurs, drain engine cooling system and refill with originally equipped coolant type. If this contamination occurs, the service change interval on Extended Life Coolant will be reduced from 6 years/150,000 miles to 3 years/30,000 miles.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.

2. WARNING: NEVER REMOVE THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP UNDER ANY CONDITIONS WHILE THE ENGINE IS OPERATING. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS COULD RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE COOLING SYSTEM OR ENGINE AND/OR PERSONAL INJURY. TO AVOID HAVING SCALDING HOT COOLANT OR STEAM BLOW OUT OF THE COOLING SYSTEM OR DEGAS BOTTLE, USE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVING THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP FROM A HOT COOLING SYSTEM OR DEGAS BOTTLE. WAIT UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS COOLED, THEN WRAP A THICK CLOTH AROUND THE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP AND TURN IT SLOWLY TO THE FIRST STOP. STEP BACK WHILE THE PRESSURE IS RELEASED FROM THE COOLING SYSTEM. WHEN CERTAIN ALL PRESSURE HAS BEEN RELEASED, PRESS DOWN ON THE PRESSURE CAP (STILL WITH A CLOTH), TURN AND REMOVE PRESSURE RELIEF CAP.

Remove pressure relief cap following described precautions. Attach 9.5 mm (0.4-inch) hose to drain tube and open radiator draincock. Drain radiator to a corresponding level below block heater. Close radiator draincock.
3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
4. Disconnect block heater power cable from block heater.
5. Loosen retaining screw and pry block heater from cylinder block while moving retaining screw from side to side to disengage clamp strap.
6. Remove block heater while noting the position of the heating element.

Installation
1. Clean the inside diameter of the cylinder block hole machined surface and hold entrance. Remove any burrs at the hole entrance to avoid damage to the O-ring.
2. Apply a liberal coating of Premium Long Life Grease XG-1-C or XG-1-K or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C75-8 to block heater O-ring and cylinder block opening.
3. Insert block heater in cylinder hole in the same position as it was removed.
4. Tighten screw to 1.6-1.8 Nm (14-15 inch lbs.).
5. Connect block heater power cable to block heater.
6. Install block heater power cable. Make sure power cable is routed and secured away from rotating or hot components.
7. Lower vehicle.

8. Refill engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange) or an equivalent DEX-C00L-coolant or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M971344-D and water.
9. Connect battery ground cable.
10. Start engine and check for leaks.
11. Turn engine off and check engine coolant level as required.
