Removal
1. General Instructions:
^ The following instructions apply to the CD4E automatic transaxle with the 2.5L engine.
^ The locations of engine mountings and engine roll restrictors are described looking from the automatic transaxle to the engine.
2. Standard preparatory measures:
^ Move the selector lever to "D" position.
^ Make a note of the radio key code.
^ Make a note of the preset radio stations.
3. Remove the battery tray.
4. Fix the radiator in position on both sides (left-hand side shown).
5. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL).
6. NOTE: Use an allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
Loosen the suspension strut nuts five turns (right-hand side shown).
7. Loosen the wheel nuts to both front wheels.
8. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the automatic transaxle assembly.
1. Ground cable
2. Automatic transaxle control
3. Transmission Range switch (TR switch)
4. Wiring harness retaining clip
9. Remove the water pump pulley cover.
1. Disconnect the engine coolant hose.
2. Remove the bolts.
3. Remove the water pump cover.
10. NOTE: Starter motor to remain in vehicle temporarily.
Disconnect the starter motor and remove the starter motor bracket.
11. Install the special tools.
12. Remove the rear transaxle support insulator bracket.
13. Remove the upper bell housing bolts (MY '99 four bolts).
14. Disconnect the plug from the Turbine Shaft Speed sensor (TSS) (shown from below).
^ Unclip the harness.
15. NOTE: Separate harness from transaxle.
Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) connector (shown from below).
16. Disconnect the selector cable from the transaxle.

17. Raise the vehicle.
18. Remove both front wheels.
19. Drain the automatic transmission fluid.
^ Place suitable pan under the transaxle.
^ Retighten the drain plug.
20. Remove radiator splash shield.
^ Remove the bolts and clips.
21. Remove the bolts from the right-hand rear, inner splash shield.
22. Remove the front lower right-hand fender splash shield.
23. NOTE: Rotate bumper cover braces forward.
Remove the bumper cover brace on left and right-hand sides from sub-frame (left-hand side shown).
Vehicles with air conditioning
24. Remove the suction accumulator A/C bracket bolts.
All Vehicles
25. Disconnect the Heated Oxygen (H02S) connector.
^ Separate the cable ties.
26. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe and the Three-Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
^ Remove the gaskets.
27. Remove the front exhaust pipe and the TWC.
^ Remove the gaskets.
28. Remove the control arm.
29. Raise the automatic transaxle assembly slightly using the High-Lift Transmission Jack.
30. Disconnect the left-hand engine support insulator from the automatic transaxle assembly.
1. Remove the nuts.
2. Remove the center bolts.
31. Disconnect the right-hand engine support insulator.
32. Remove the steering gear heat shield.
33. Remove the steering gear (two bolts) and tie it up (left-hand side shown).
34. Disconnect the power steering oil hoses from the subframe (one nut and two bolts).
35. Remove the transaxle cooler line brackets.
^ Reposition the suction accumulator (A/C), if equipped.
36. WARNING: Support the subframe using Rotunda Powertrain Lift. Place wooden block approximately 40 finches in length secured to lift under sub-frame.
Remove the sub-frame.
37. Remove the rear roll restrictor through bolt
38. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove the upper transaxle cooling tube.
39. CAUTION: Do not loosen connector cooler inlet to transaxle.
Remove the lower transaxle cooling tube.
^ Unclip transaxle cooling tube from hold down.
40. Position Transmission Jack under the oil pan.
CAUTION: To avoid to damage joints and boots, do not bent the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
41. Using the special tools disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.
42. CAUTION: To avoid to damage joints and boots, do not bent the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
Pull out the left-hand halfshaft and tie it up
CAUTION: To avoid to damage joints and boots, do not bent the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
43. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft
^ Secure the right-hand halfshaft out of the way with mechanic s wire.
44. NOTE: Discard the nuts.
Remove the torque converter rubber and the four torque converter nuts.
^ Remove rubber cover to gain access to the torque converter nuts.
^ Rotate the torque converter to gain access to remaining nuts.
45. Install the Hi-Lift Transmission Jack and CD4E transaxle adapter.
^ Secure with the Retaining straps.
46. Remove the lower bellhousing bolts.
47. Remove the front bellhousing bolts.
48. CAUTION: Torque converter is heavy. Install special tool before lowering transaxle.
Install special tool.
49. Lower the transaxle.
