With Manual Transmission
Special Tools:
1. NOTE: The locations of the engine mountings and the engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
General note:
- Steps which apply only to particular variants are indicated with a note.
- If necessary, cut the cable ties and renew during installation.
2. Make an auxiliary tool for fixing the hood in a wide-open position.
3. Install the auxiliary tool to the hood.
4. Disconnect the battery cables
5. Remove the battery.
6. Remove the water pump pulley cover.
- Detach the coolant hose.
7. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL).
- Disconnect the upper intake vacuum supply line.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Remove the lower engine cover (if equipped).
WARNING: When the engine is hot, there is risk of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
10. Remove the radiator splash shield and drain the coolant.
11. Disconnect the radiator lower hose from the radiator.
12. Remove the drain plug and drain the transmission fluid.
- Tighten the drain plug.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
1 Turn the cable disc and disconnect the cable.
2 Pull out the clip and remove the cable from the bracket.
- Disconnect the spring.
15. Remove the speed control cable from the throttle lever.
16. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose.
17. Remove the cable bracket.
18. Loosen the Central Junction Box (CJB) and Position it to one side.
19. Remove the battery bracket.
20. Disconnect the starter motor wiring.
21. Disconnect the starter motor positive cable.
- Open the cable housing and pull out the positive cable.
WARNING: Before disconnecting the fuel lines release the pressure from the fuel system by opening the pressure relief valve.
22. Using the special tools remove the safety clips and disconnect the fuel lines.
CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilt on the paint work, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
23. Drain the brake fluid reservoir.
24. Remove the clutch slave cylinder hydraulic line.
25. Remove the coolant expansion tank hoses.
26. Remove the coolant expansion tank.
- Disconnect the coolant level indicator electrical connector.
27. Remove the coolant hoses.
- From cylinder block
- From heater
- Disconnect the heater coolant hose.
- From the thermostat housing.
28. Remove the radiator upper hose from the radiator.
29. Disconnect the coolant hose.
30. NOTE: The nuts do not need to be removed.
Loosen the right-hand suspension strut nut five turns.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
31. Disconnect the suction accumulator electrical connector.
All Vehicles
32. Disconnect the fan motor electrical connectors.
- Detach the connectors and the wiring harness.
33. Remove the fan ground cable from the body.
34. Remove the fan from the radiator.
- Detach the fan wiring harness.
35. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir and detach it (push-fit). Position it to one side.
CAUTION: Do not damage the tube/hose (A/C) (if equipped).
36. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) cover plate.
- Remove the rivets.
37. Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the ground cable.
38. Remove the fan from the radiator (continued).
39. Disconnect the heater control vacuum hoses.
CAUTION: Do not let hydraulic oil drop onto the drive belt.
40. Disconnect the power steering lines.
1 Disconnect the Power Steering Pressure Switch (PSP).
2 Return line.
3 Pressure line bracket and ground cable.
41. Disconnect two ground cables from the transaxle and remove the electrical connector.
42. Disconnect the shifter cables.
1 Disconnect the shifter cables from the shifter lever.
2 Remove the nuts.
3 Position the shifter bracket aside.
43. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe.
44. Remove the right-hand splash shields (shown with wheel removed).
CAUTION: Do not damage the boot and the wheel speed sensor ring.
45. Disconnect the right-hand lower suspension arm (left-hand side shown).
- Remove the lower suspension arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joints by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Secure the halfshaft.
46. Remove the right-hand halfshaft from the intermediate shaft.
CAUTION: Do not damage the boot and the wheel speed sensor ring.
NOTE: Secure the halfshaft.
47. Remove the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
48. Remove the condenser core from the radiator.
- One bolt on each side (right-hand side shown.)
- Secure the condenser core.
49. Disconnect the compressor electrical connector.
All Vehicles
50. Remove the radiator.
51. Remove the fan.
52. Disconnect the left Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) electrical connector.
53. Remove the coolant pipe.
54. Remove the accessory drive belt.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
55. Remove compressor heat shield.
56. Detach the compressor.
- Secure the compressor to one side.
All Vehicles
57. Remove the left-hand engine support insulator.
58. Remove the right-hand engine support insulator.
1 Center bolt
2 Three bolts
3 Engine support insulator
59. Remove the right-hand engine support insulator bracket.
60. Lower the vehicle.
61. Using the special tool, secure the engine.
62. Remove the engine front support insulator.
63. Remove the engine rear support insulator.
64. Remove the engine.
