With Automatic Transmission
Special Tools:
1. NOTE: The locations of the engine mountings and the engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
General note.
- Steps which apply only to particular variants are indicated with a note.
- If necessary, cut the cable ties and renew during installation.
2. Make an auxiliary tool for fixing the hood in a wide-open position.
3. Install the auxiliary tool to the hood.
4. Disconnect the battery cables.
5. Remove the battery.
6. Remove the water pump pulley shield.
- Detach the coolant hose.
7. Remove the Air Cleaner (ACL).
- Disconnect the upper intake vacuum supply line.
8. Raise and support the vehicle.
9. Remove the lower engine cover (if equipped).
WARNING: When the engine is hot there is risk of scalding. Failure to follow this instructions may result in personal injury.
10. Remove the radiator splash shield and drain the coolant.
11. Disconnect the lower coolant hose from the radiator.
12. Remove the drain plug and drain the automatic transmission fluid.
- Tighten the drain plug.
13. Lower the vehicle.
14. Disconnect the accelerator cable.
1 Turn the cable disc and disconnect the cable.
2 Pull out the clip and remove the cable from the bracket.
- Disconnect the spring.
15. Remove the speed control cable from the throttle lever.
16. Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) hose.
17. Remove the cable bracket.
18. Remove the coolant expansion tank hoses.
19. Remove the coolant expansion tank.
- Disconnect the coolant level indicator electrical connector.
20. Remove the coolant hoses.
- From the cylinder block.
- From the heater.
- Disconnect the heater coolant hose.
- From the thermostat housing.
21. Remove the radiator upper hose.
22. Disconnect the coolant hose.
23. Remove the selector cable.
1 Detach the bracket.
2 Disconnect the selector cable.
24. Disconnect the starter motor wiring.
25. Disconnect the starter motor positive cable.
- Open the cable housing and pull out the positive cable.
WARNING: Before disconnecting the fuel lines release the pressure from the fuel system by opening the pressure relief valve.
26. Using the special tools, remove the safety clips and disconnect the fuel lines.
27. Disconnect the following electrical connectors (transaxle shown removed).
1 Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor
2 Transmission control
3 Temperature gauge sender unit
4 Transmission Range (TR) sensor
- Detach the harness.
NOTE: The nuts do not need to be removed.
28. Loosen the right-hand suspension strut nut five turns.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
29. Disconnect the suction accumulator electrical connector.
30. Disconnect the two fan motor electrical connectors.
- Detach the connectors and the wiring harness.
31. Remove the fan ground cable from the body.
32. Remove the fan from the radiator.
- Detach the fan wiring harness.
33. Remove the fan from the radiator.
34. Disconnect the heater control vacuum hoses.
35. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir and detach it. Position it to one side.
CAUTION: Do not damage the tube/hose (A/C), (where equipped).
36. Remove the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) cover plate.
- Remove the rivets.
CAUTION: Do not let hydraulic oil drop onto the drive belt.
37. Disconnect the power steering lines.
1 Disconnect the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch.
2 Return line.
3 Pressure line bracket and ground cable.
38. Disconnect the PCM and ground cable.
- Remove the engine harness from the bulkhead.
39. Disconnect the main engine harness electrical connector.

40. Remove the transaxle upper cooling tube.
41. Raise and support the vehicle.
42. Remove the transaxle lower cooling tube (shown from the top).
43. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe and the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC).
- Remove the gaskets.
44. Remove the dual converter Y-pipe and the TWC (continued).
- Disconnect the hanger insulators.
- Discard the gasket.
45. Remove the front lower right-hand splash shield.
46. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
CAUTION: Do not damage the boot and the wheel speed sensor ring.
47. Disconnect the right-hand lower suspension arm (left-hand side shown).
- Remove the lower suspension arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
48. Loosen the subframe bolts on the right-hand side.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joints by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Secure the halfshaft to one side.
49. Disconnect the right-hand halfshaft from the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the heat shield from the intermediate shaft bracket.
50. Remove the intermediate shaft.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
51. Remove the condenser core from the radiator.
- One bolt on each side (right-hand side shown.)
- Secure the condenser core.
52. Remove the radiator.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
53. Disconnect the compressor electrical connector.
54. Remove the fan.
55. Disconnect the left Heated Oxygen Sensor (H02S) electrical connector.
56. Remove the coolant pipe.
57. Check the accessory drive belt tension.
1 Fixed cast lug.
2 Moving stops.
3 Belt tensioner
- Adjustment is not possible.
58. Check the accessory drive belt tension (continued).

2 Drive belt
3 Tensioning direction
- If the right-hand stop is touching the cast lug, install a new accessory drive belt during installation.
59. Remove the accessory drive belt.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
60. Remove compressor heat shield.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
61. Detach the compressor.
- Secure the compressor to one side.
62. Disconnect the torque converter from the engine drive plate (four nuts).
- Remove the plastic cover.
63. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the left-hand side.
64. Remove the transaxle lower flange bolts.
65. Lower the vehicle.
66. Using the special tool, secure the engine.
67. Remove the transaxle flange upper bolts.
68. Remove the starter motor.
69. Remove the ignition wire bracket from the upper front support insulator bracket.
70. NOTE: Install new self-locking nuts.
NOTE: Mark on the engine support bracket the position of the nuts.
Remove the upper front engine support bracket.
71. Remove the engine front support insulator.
72. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.

2 Belt tensioner
CAUTION: Do not let the torque converter drop out of the transaxle.
73. Remove the engine.
