Left
Removal1. Remove the water pump.
2. Remove the lower radiator hose.
3. Remove the left-hand Heated Oxygen (HO2S) Sensor.
4. Remove the camshafts.
5. Remove the special tool 303-290A.
6. Remove the twelve hydraulic lash adjusters.
7. Remove the coolant crossover tube and position it to one side.
8. Remove the oil level indicator and tube.
9. NOTE: Remove the left-hand cylinder head with the exhaust manifold.
Remove the cylinder head bolts in the indicated sequence and remove the left-hand cylinder head leaving the exhaust manifold attached.
10. Remove the exhaust manifold from the cylinder head in the indicated sequence.
- Remove and discard the gasket.
11. Clean and inspect the cylinder head and cylinder block.
Installation
1. NOTE: The head gaskets must be installed over the cylinder head to cylinder block dowels.
Install new head gaskets.
2. CAUTION: Use care when installing the cylinder head or damage to the cylinder block and to the cylinder head may result.
NOTE: Make sure the cylinder head is installed in its original position.
Position the left-hand cylinder head and insert new cylinder head bolts and washers.
- Tighten the left-hand cylinder head bolts in the indicated tightening sequence in six stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 40 Nm.
- Stage 2: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Stage 3: Loosen 360 degrees (one full turn) in reverse order.
- Stage 4: Tighten to 40 Nm.
- Stage 5: Tighten 90 degrees.
- Stage 6: Tighten 90 degrees.
3. NOTE: Tighten the nuts in the indicated sequence.
Install the exhaust manifold.
- Install a new gasket.
4. Install the PCV valve and hose.
1 Connect the hose.
2 Install the bracket nut.
5. Install the oil level indicator.
6. Install the special tool 303-290A.
7. Install the lash adjusters.
8. Install the lower radiator hose.
9. Install the water pump.
10. Install the left-hand H02S.
