With Manual Transmission
NOTE: Ford does not provide camshaft gear timing marks, or information to perform timing belt service without the special tools shown in this procedure.
Special Tools:
1. NOTE: The location of engine mountings and engine support insulators are described looking from the transaxle to the engine.
General note.
- Steps which apply only to particular variants are indicated with a note.
- If necessary, cut the cable ties and renew during installation.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Make an auxiliary tool for fixing the hood in a wide-open position.
4. Install the auxiliary tool to the hood.
5. Raise and support the vehicle.
6. Remove the radiator splash shield.
7. WARNING: When the engine is hot, there is risk of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
Remove the radiator lower hose.
1 Disconnect the hose from the coolant pipe and drain the coolant system.
2 Remove the radiator lower hose.
8. Detach the intake pipe with the resonator.
1 Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.
2 Disconnect the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
3 Remove the bolt and the two nuts.
9. Remove the intake pipe with Air Cleaner (ACL) housing.
1 Disconnect the crankcase ventilation hose.
2 Disconnect the intake hose.
10. Remove the cables from the throttle lever.
1 Remove the clip.
2 Remove the accelerator cable.
3 Remove the speed control cable.
Vehicles With Speed Control
11. Disconnect the speed control cable.
1 Disconnect the cable from the throttle valve.
2 Move the cable up and down and pull it out of the retaining bushing.
3 Press the retaining bushing out of the bracket.
All Vehicles
12. Disconnect the throttle cable.
- Unhook the cable.
- Remove the plastic retaining clip.
13. WARNING: Before disconnecting the fuel lines release the pressure from the fuel system by opening the pressure relief valve.
Using the special tools, disconnect the fuel lines.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
14. Remove the coolant pipe bracket.
All Vehicles
15. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
1 Remove the upper bolt and nut.
- Remove the coolant hose from the bracket.
- Remove the coolant hose brackets the engine lifting eye and pull out the engine oil dipstick tube.
2 Remove the bracket for the tube and hose.
3 Remove the lower bolts.
16. Disconnect the engine wiring harness electrical connector.
17. Remove the reversing light switch electrical connector.
18. Disconnect the temperature sender electrical connector.
19. Remove the engine wiring harness.
- Detach the power steering fluid reservoir and position it to one side.
1 Disconnect the ground cable.
2 Remove the screw.
3 Disconnect the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) electrical connector.
20. Disconnect electrical connectors.
1 Power Steering Pressure (PSP) switch
2 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S)
21. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.
22. Remove the cover and detach the electrical connector.
23. Remove the transaxle upper flange bolts.
24. NOTE: The nuts do not need to be removed.
Loosen the right-hand suspension strut nut five turns.
25. Remove the accessory drive belt upper guard.
26. Disconnect the coolant hoses.
27. Remove the coolant expansion tank.
28. Remove the coolant hose from the water pump and from the coolant pipe.
29. Disconnect the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) from the exhaust manifold.
30. Raise and support the vehicle.
31. Remove the TWC.
1 Remove the bolt and the retaining clip for the TWC.
2 Disconnect the TWC from the exhaust system.
3 Unhook the TWC from the hanger Insulators.
4 Disconnect the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
5 Detach the TWC from the clamp.
32. Disconnect the vacuum pipe from the intake manifold.
- Disconnect the quick-release coupling and pull out the pipe.
33. Disconnect the starter motor wiring.
34. Remove the starter motor.
35. Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
36. Remove the right-hand splash shield.
37. NOTE: Mark the drive direction.
Remove the accessory drive belt.
1 Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
2 Working clockwise, loosen the accessory drive belt and remove it.
- Remove the water pump pulley.
3 Remove the idler pulley.
38. Remove the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper.
39. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner.
40. CAUTION: Do not damage the boot and the wheel speed sensor ring.
Disconnect the right-hand lower arm (left-hand side shown).
- Remove the lower arm ball joint. from the wheel knuckle.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joints by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
NOTE: Secure the halfshaft to one side.
41. Disconnect the right-hand halfshaft from the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the heat shield from intermediate shaft bracket.
42. Remove the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft bracket.
Vehicles With Air Conditioning
43. Detach the compressor and position it to one side.
All Vehicles
44. Remove the right-hand engine support insulator center bolt.
45. Remove the left-hand engine support insulator.
46. Remove the right-hand engine support insulator.
1 Remove the center bolt.
2 Remove the bolts.
47. Remove the right-hand engine support insulator bracket from the transaxle.
48. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the left-hand side.
49. Remove the transaxle flange bolts on the right-hand side.
50. Lower the vehicle.
51. Remove the generator (engine shown removed)
1 Disconnect the electrical connector.
2 Disconnect the battery positive cable.
3 Remove the bolt.
4 Detach the bolt.
52. Using special tool and a Floor Crane secure the engine.
CAUTION: Before lifting the engine protect the inner fender with the fender cover.
53. Remove the engine front support insulator.
54. NOTE: Raise the engine before removing the power steering pump.
Remove the power steering pump and position it to one side.
NOTE: Make sure the safe seat from transaxle to the jack.
55. Secure the transaxle with the jack.
56. Remove the transaxle rear support insulator.
1 Remove the nuts.
2 Remove the bolts.
57. Remove the engine.
