ISSUE
Minimal clearance of the CD4E transaxle to subframe makes transaxle installation and removal more difficult. This is due to the addition of a new output shaft sensor boss on the outer case adjacent to the left hand halfshaft bore. This boss went into production in March of 1998. This case can be used on past models.
ACTION
Remove the rear transaxle support bracket when servicing the CD4E transaxle. Refer to the following Service Tip for details.
SERVICE TIP
NOTE
FOLLOW STEPPED PROCEDURES OF APPROPRIATE SERVICE OR WORKSHOP MANUAL, EXCEPT FOR THE FOLLOWING ITEMS.
Recommended Steps For Installing Transaxle With The New Case
1. Do not install the rear transaxle support bracket until Step 4 (below).
2. Guide the transaxle into its installed position with the engine. Adequate clearance should be achieved by following Step 1's (above) direction. Prying the engine block toward the vehicle front can gain additional clearance to accomplish the transaxle-to-engine decking.
3. Install the transaxle-to-engine mounting bolts and tighten to specification.
4. Guide the transaxle rear support bracket into position on the transaxle housing from underneath the vehicle and hand start the three (3) attaching bolts.
5. Install the rear transaxle support bracket insulator through-bolt.
6. When the vehicle is lowered, tighten the rear transaxle support bracket-to-transaxle housing attaching bolts from above.
Recommended Steps For Removing Transaxle Which Has The New Case Is Simply The Reverse Of The Above Recommendation
1. After following Service or Workshop Manual steps, with engine properly supported, remove the three (3) transaxle rear support bracket attaching bolts. This is done from above, prior to raising the vehicle on the hoist.
2. Remove the transaxle rear support bracket insulator through-bolt and set the bracket aside.
3. Remove the transaxle from the engine. If additional subframe clearance is required, pry the engine toward the front of the vehicle.
